I’ve been styling a lot of dresses lately, so decided it was time for a change. What is the trend that never ends? A denim on denim outfit. It is a great look that never goes out of style. Of course, there are a few tricks for making it work, whether you want a super casual look or want to show a little flair.
I wrote a post about this very trend some time ago (see this post from last year). In that post, I styled it very casually for running errands. For the look today, I’ve dressed it up a bit for an outside theater evening at the Pageant of the Masters. (Read more about that below.)
The denim on denim outfit
If you want to create a slim line for your outfit, choose denim pieces that are close in color. We all know that a single color can be the most slimming for your figure, right? My only criteria for choosing these jeans was that the color of the denim was similar.

Remember my “shopping pledge” for August? I have actually done very well on my pledge. I should have called it my “no buying” pledge as it is almost impossible not to at least look at new things, which is probably technically called shopping. As a fashion blogger, I do have to keep abreast of new trends, right? Haha! In any case, I have to confess that I bought this denim top on a recent trip to Target. I wasn’t technically shopping but saw it on a clearance rack on my way to pick up a prescription. Really, is buying a top for $5.43 really shopping? There must be some price limit, right? In any case, it was too good to pass up. Surprisingly, this denim tank top is still available in lots of sizes and is on clearance online for $8.99! Wow!! Pick one up now if you like it!
Animal print anything is still trending in a big way. I’ve been seeing pattern mixing with tartan plaid and animal print for fall on Pinterest and in fashion shows. I will have to style it so you all can see what you think! And animal print looks so amazing with denim, doesn’t it? It gives an unexpected touch to a denim on denim outfit. The contrast makes them pop.
The accessories
When you style an outfit with a monochromatic color scheme, statement pieces are a great choice for jewelry. For this outfit, I added tassel earrings and a necklace with the same. The tassel feature adds an organic feel that goes well with the denim. And the two-tone tan fringed bag coordinates with both the jewelry and the calf-hair mules.

The versatile cardigan
Cardigan sweaters are always in style, and this fall is no exception. They come in short or long styles, lightweight or heavy, and in a multitude of colors. They truly are a wardrobe essential, especially in the fall. And for a cooler evening, it’s so easy to pack one along, just in case. In keeping with the neutral accessories in this denim on denim outfit, I chose a shorter version in a neutral tan.
Add a tan or beige cardigan to your fall wardrobe. It will go with everything you have and you’ll wear it time and time again. Here is a similar lightweight version that comes in several colors and is on sale! Woohoo!
The Pageant of the Masters
I’m sure many of you have heard of or are familiar with Laguna Beach, right here in Orange County. The village of Laguna Beach started as an Arts Colony and continues to have that reputation today. Along with great shopping, fabulous restaurants, and summer arts events. Their biggest arts experience is the Pageant of the Masters, which takes place every summer up until Labor Day. This presentation is a 2-hour theatrical performance where famous works of art are brought to life onstage by inserting real people into famous works of art. You have to look very closely to see that the image onstage is not just a painting, as there are real people inserted into the painting or sculpture. It is truly amazing. Each year has a different theme, and this year it’s “Under the Sun.” The story of Laguna, surfing, and all things Southern California. What a lovely experience sitting outside close to the beach in a natural ravine watching the show and the moon and stars above. It is an experience you need to put on your bucket list!
What does your denim on denim look like? How will you style it? I would love to hear about your version of the denim on denim look.
I love the double denim outfit, and the leopard printshoes look great with it! The top was such a bargain! Thanks for linking up!

Hi Jess,
Happy Labor Day! Thanks so much for the nice comments. A monochromatic look just needs the right accessories–right?

This is a very nice look. I think tonal dressing, even in denim, takes on an elegant feel. Nice find on the Target tank top!
Hi Kim,
