What could be cuter in this almost-fall season than a mustard yellow shirtdress? And this little number with the smocking and bright color is especially fun. While the colors are fall-like, the style is one that can be worn for the warmer days of fall. Or, Indian Summer, as it’s sometimes called in the East.
You all know I’m a yellow gal, right? I love almost all shades of yellow, but I’m totally drawn to this deeper mustard shade. I’ve styled yellow in so many posts–like here, here, and here–and I hope you’re not tired of seeing it! Lol! And since I also love a shirtdress, this was the perfect mustard yellow shirtdress for me!
Yellow is a color that just makes me feel good. Do you have a color like that? One that you tend to reach for over and over? I mean, besides black; we all tend to reach for that when we don’t have time to think about what to wear or are in the mood for a certain look. I know a lot of ladies feel pretty in pink, while others feel elegant in neutrals like tan and cream. Whatever your special color is, pull it out and try it on! Especially when you’re feeling blue.
Now, about the mustard yellow shirtdress for a warm day
This is another cutie from a New Day at Target. There are so many adorable pieces in this line, and many others at Target. I’m styling the dress two ways: one for a more summer-like look, and the second for a fall day. And speaking of fall, we are actually having autumn-like weather, with warm sunny days, and cool evenings and early mornings. It probably won’t last, but it’s a nice change after the intense summer heat this year. How is your fall weather?
This is the kind of dress you can just add sandals to and go. It would look very cute with a big hat and bag, too. These are the absolute softest sandals you can buy. They come in three colors and you can see them here. This satchel bag is a perfect size for me.
Kate Spade Satchel: White | Black
I read somewhere that you shouldn’t wear yellow and black together. To be honest, that’s always been a good look for me and I have styled versions of it many times. Just goes to show you, style is personal. The idea is to feel confident in whatever you wear, so it’s really up to you. If you feel good, flaunt your style!
Now, the mustard yellow shirtdress for fall
For a cool evening or fall weather day, I would add my off-white denim jacket. The design of the fabric on the dress is white pearls looping with gray chains–almost an equestrian pattern. So, a jean jacket makes a nice compliment and it looks as amazing with mustard as everything else!
A great pair of booties automatically says the weather is changing, and these simple gray ones are no exception. These are from last season but the booties just keep on coming. You can see a gorgeous dark gray version here. So if you have some in your closet, pull them out! They are still hot and trendy, and really, who cares? They are a great solution for fall and winter wardrobes. A cutesy dress like this would really pop with a pair of tall boots, too. I love the look of the booties with the feminine dress.
My bag is also from last season, but there are lots of smart-looking gray bags this season as well. Here is just one nice example that’s quite inexpensive.
Adjustable necklace | Earrings
Gold jewelry is very much on trend. One of my favorite designer brands is Gorjana. They are available at Nordstrom, and the designer lives close by in Laguna Beach. This necklace is the adjustable lariat, and the lovely saleslady shared with me how she turns it around when wearing statement earrings. They shouldn’t compete, right? So, I tried it and I love the result. And check out these amazing earrings!! Talk about a statement! They are way outside the box for me but I love the design and the craftsmanship. The mix of geometric shapes is so interesting. What do you think?
A final thought…
As I am writing this on 9/11, I can’t help but think about this tragic event. It truly changed the world. And in some ways, it destroyed our optimism, our trust in our fellow human beings. We have to fight hard to stay away from the negativism, however, and focus on what’s good and what’s right in our world. Still, it’s important to remember this day, seventeen years ago, to honor those who were lost and the families who mourn them. My thoughts and prayers are with the families and the heroes of 9/11.
I love this dress- it is cute and I am really getting into mustard – a colour that is really suiting you Darlene! xx
Thanks, Maria. Yes, I might be going just a bit overboard with mustard this season! Haha! I love it! It’ll be fun to see how you style it! Have a wonderful week.
xx Darlene

Ooh, I’ll be sure to check out your mustard look, Jacqui! I’m catching myself styling quite a bit of mustard, but I love it and it’s such a lovely color for fall, as you say!
Thanks, Jacqui!
