You know that sweater dresses are popular every winter and red ones are big this holiday season. Two of my favorite bloggers are also styling a red sweater dress and it’s fun to see their versions. Check out Shelbee of Shelbee on the Edge, and Jess of Elegantly Dressed and Stylish to see how they are dressing for the holidays! Red, anyone?
I’m a big fan of the sweater dress. You may remember my black sweater dress in the post Easy to Style Sweater Dress with Sneakers and Boots. You basically just throw one on and add shoes! Of course, the accessories make all the difference. Depending on what you wear with a sweater dress, you can wear one almost anywhere. And in colder weather, you can be both stylish and warm as well as casual or dressy.
The Red Sweater Dress Outfit
A ruffled neckline and pointelle detail lend a touch of romance to this flared sweater dress. The mock neck is cute and provides warmth. It’s perfect for that last-minute holiday party. And you can wear it all winter long. Best of all, it’s still available and on sale!
For this post, I’ve styled the dress with three different types of shoes. This illustrates how easy it is to wear this type of dress and to show you how much just a change of shoes changes the look. Easy peasy, right?
With Neutral Boots
There’s a lot of discussion (well, in the fashion world!) debating black versus neutral shoes. The lighter neutral shades are very popular and said to lengthen the leg and to let the eye focus elsewhere on the outfit. All good points to consider!
Here I’m showing you the dress with tan mid-calf boots and a griege bag. (Here is a similar shoulder bag in a goldtone.)
Knee-high Boots and Dress
Knee boots have made a comeback this season so pull yours out! Winter is coming (it’s already snowing in many places!) and these boots look great over skinny jeans and with leggings as well as with a dress or skirt. The boots shown here are old riding-style boots by Kenneth Cole Reaction and a similar riding boot is still available.
In keeping with the more casual feel of the boots and dress, a buffalo plaid scarf in black and red makes a nice statement. This inexpensive plaid scarf is an easy way to add a quick detail to any outfit.
Black Chunky Heels
For a dressier look, heels always do the job. And black pumps are a classic and give the red dress an upscale look. Of course, you could always wear a red sweater dress with nude pumps if that is your preference. Both would work nicely.
I’ve linked a similar black pump for you to check out–you can wear these almost year-round. If it’s really cold, of course, a pair of opaque black tights or even patterned ones would look super!
What’s your verdict? Do you prefer a black shoe with the dress–or neutral-colored shoes?
If you are in the market for a sweater dress, give this one a look. It’s soft, the flared shape is forgiving, and red is a dynamite color on a cold winter day. It’s also perfect for the holidays, and you can still pick one up. Valentine’s Day will be here before you know it, and a cute red sweater dress makes a lovely outfit for dinner with your special someone.
Love, love, love! The red sweater dress is so beautiful and very striking. I love all the ways you have styled it. The tan slouchy boots add an unexpected element. And I adore the Buffalo plaid scarf. Thanks for linking up with me!

I ended liking the dress best with the slouchy boots! I didn’t really think I’d like it, but I wore it that way for Christmas and loved it. Gotta love buffalo plaid in all its forms, right? Lol!
Happy New Year, my friend,

I keep seeing red sweater dresses and feel it’s THE dress of the season – love it. Jacqui x
I think you may be right about the IT dress idea, Jacqui! I’m seeing them on lots of other bloggers, too!
Enjoy the holidays,
xx Darlene
You look gorgeous! Love it even more with the added scarf!
Ellibelle’s Corner
Thanks, Ellibelle. That was one of those last-minute additions, but I like it, too. Can’t go wrong with buffalo plaid, right?
Happy holidays,
xx Darlene

You look Dar-ling! I love sweater dresses and have for the longest time. I think I own 5 of them, more neutrals and Fall colors. The red one I wore is quite thick so it will be great for the winter. You look fab in red and I love that you tried different booties. I tend to head to black or paterned boots with red, but do love the neutral sloucy boot here. Thanks so very much for the mention!
Happy Holidays!

Well since great minds think alike, I had to mention you and Shelbee and your super cute red sweater dress outfits! I agree about the black and red but now that I’ve tried it, I like the neutral shoe with it, too. I guess that’s what this blogging thing is all about, right? Trying new things and stepping outside the box. That’s the fun part!
Happy holidays to you, too!
