Even in Southern California, it can get pretty cold at this time of year. Especially in the early morning and evenings. So I’ve found the perfect outerwear–this packable down coat.
I’ve long been a fan of these puffy-style coats and they just keep getting better and better. I still have a black maxi down coat that has served me well over the past ten+ years. It was the perfect solution to sitting through Friday night football and LaCrosse games in cold windy stadiums when my son was in high school and played LaCrosse in college.
I oten wear this older coat for cold morning/evening walks with my dog, Lulu. But compared to the newer versions, it’s quite a bit bulkier and definitely not packable.
Hence, my new packable down coat! Since I still purchase items with my future travel in mind, and this clever version folds into the pocket, I know it will be perfect for packing! (Come on already, COVID!!) Amazingly, and despite the lightweight down, it is equally warm and cozy.

The Packable Down Coat
The Down Coat
LandsEnd has long been my go-to for outerwear. Their coats and jackets are always high quality and designed to last for years.
My color of choice is usually black for all the obvious reasons, but I was drawn to this rich burgundy shade. Burgundy is a versatile color that looks great with almost any color!
Here are some of the amazing features of this coat:
- TEMPERATURE RATING – WARMER: +3° to +29° Fahrenheit. Learn more
- Water-resistant shell and lining
- 800 fill power HyperDry™ down
- Attached hood with bungee cord-lock
- Flattering quilt lines enhance the shape
- Two-way zipper for venting and mobility with internal storm flap
- Packable into its own pocket
- Zip pockets
- Hits above the knee
- 100% nylon shell. Machine wash. Imported
Did you catch the “machine wash?” Gotta love that, right?!
It’s also available in maxi length and a shorter jacket style.
The Scarf and Gloves
LandsEnd also offers lots of fleece fashion pieces and I love their scarves and gloves. I also adore the combination of burgundy and leopard. (You can see it styled in the post Shimmer Sweater Outfit for the Holidays.)
The scarf’s fleece fabric is antistatic (thank goodness!), and resists lint and particles as well as pilling. It’s brushed on both sides for extra softness. The weight is fairly light, so you don’t feel too “bulked up.”
A pair of gloves you can throw in the wash is a must for me. These keep fingers warm in chilly temps. Best of all, there’s no need to expose your fingers to the cold to answer your phone. They have a feature called the “EZ Touch fingertips” so you can keep your gloves on! Love that, too!
These pieces are on sale at a ridiculously low price right now–under $10. I purchased lots of sets in various colors for Christmas gifts that I know people will love and appreciate.
Shop the Other Items:
All of these items are on sale, so it’s a good time to shop. The quilted tote bag, at under $30, makes a great Christmas gift, too!)
Turtleneck Sweater in Chocolate (also comes in bright pink!)
Quilted Tote Bag (Rich burgundy, camel, and black.)
While our cooler weather is just kicking in, I know that many of you are already styling warm outerwear! So I wanted to share this find with you because I know you’ve found that things sell out early in the season. A packable down coat is a great choice for casual cold-weather and holiday style.
Stay warm, my friends!
