My answer to the question, am I a sweatshirt kind of girl, is a resounding YES! To me, there is nothing better than a super soft sweatshirt. And contrary to what many think, they aren’t always overwhelmingly warm, so you can wear them almost year-round.
I tend to choose lighter–and softer–versions that I throw on with shorts or jeans. They are perfect for early morning walks, cool evening strolls, and bonfires on the beach.

The Origin of the Sweatshirt
According to Merriam-Webster’s dictionary, the word “sweatshirt” materialized in 1925. It denoted a collarless, long-sleeved, oversize pullover made of thick fleecy cotton. The earliest sweatshirts were gray utilitarian gear that athletes wore while training for traditional sports. Sweatshirts not only provided warmth, but as their name revealed, they also possessed the functional ability to induce and absorb sweat during exercise.
The sweatshirt’s potential as a portable advertising tool was discovered in the 1960s when U.S. universities began printing their names on the medium. For students and parents alike, university names on sweats became the preferred casual attire for exhibiting school pride.
The T-shirt slogan fad of the seventies inevitably translated to sweatshirts. Recognizing the relative simplicity of customization and the power of clever graphics combined with catchphrases, sweatshirts became a vehicle for personal expression for both the designer and the person wearing them.
The Basic Sweatshirt
A classic version of the original is a crewneck sweatshirt with the “vee” at the neck. But in all the colors and options available today, they no longer seem boring.
One of my absolute favorites is the soft sweatshirt from Lou and Grey. Lou and Grey is a Loft brand of casual styled pieces that are super soft and easy to wear. They became VERY popular during the ‘Pandemic Style Period’–you all know what I mean. When sweats and joggers were de rigueur! Lol!
I bought several of these Summersoft Sweatshirts. The colors offered change by season, but they are all so cute! I have a light green, a dark green, a white, black, and finally, this yellow version. (I know you aren’t surprised that I bought one in yellow! 😜 )
Gently Destructed Pull-on Jeggings
The slide sandals are an older pair from Sam Edelman. This year’s version of this comfy wedge sandal comes in ivory and black with a cute knotted strap across the top. These are honestly the comfiest sandals I own!
In terms of sizing, Lou and Grey does run a bit large, so this sweatshirt is an extra small. If you like a looser fit, go with your usual size.
I bought my usual size small and it is nice and roomy. Love the kangaroo pocket!
Here, I’ve styled it with cut-off shorts in a pinkish wash with a comfy high-rise. They are super affordable and come in three colors.
The Aloha Sweatshirt
OK, it goes without saying that this cute Aloha sweatshirt is my current favorite! I did take it along to Kauai for our trip but hardly needed it in the absolutely perfect 85° weather. Heavenly!
I did end up wearing it, however. On the airplane and for our amazing helicopter trip around the island. More about that in a later post!
This sweatshirt is also part of the Lou and Grey line. It sells out quickly but they do restock this item.
So, if you are a sweatshirt girl, like me, you have lots of options to choose from: colors, styles, fits–they’re all available! This versatile fashion item is essential for everybody, young, old, and in-between. How do YOU style a sweatshirt?
