Hello, everyone!
Since Fall is officially here, I thought it might be fun to talk about home decor for the season. (Especially while my ankle is healing!) I have struggled with this in the past, as I don’t have a color palette in my home that goes well with the holiday colors of orange for Autumn and red and green for the Christmas holidays. So I tend to get a little creative and try new color combinations that won’t upset the color balance in my home.
So, when I was shopping at TJ Maxx not too long ago, I saw these light aqua pumpkins. My first thought was that was a very strange color for Fall decor. As I tooled around the store, I kept thinking about those pumpkins, which really were kind of pretty. Then I stumbled across an orange plaid patterned tablecloth that had a nice bit of an aqua blue tone and it suddenly clicked: how great would it be to add some aqua and orange pumpkins to bring out the blue tones in the tablecloth?!
My home decor is a combination of traditional and coastal decor, so blues, grays, and tans are part of my palette. So I decided I could definitely introduce a bit of the orange as long as I played up the blues. My Fall table setting was born!
Some time ago I gave up on stocking several sets of seasonal dishes, opting instead for white: specifically, the white catering tableware from Pottery Barn. (I am showing the link to a great deal for this set from Houzz.) This is an inexpensive way to buy sets of pieces that you truly need, as they come in sets of 12 dinner plates, 12 salad, 12 coffee cups, 12 bowls…You get the idea. I add color to this through the use of colorful salad plates, or bowls and glasses and such. The white basic pieces are a great foundation to build on and don’t limit the many ways you can style your table settings.

You can see that I added aqua salad plates, and aqua water glasses to bring out the blues in the pattern. I found these beautiful blue and aqua mums at the local Michael’s, attached them to round grapevine circlets that I use as napkin rings.

For the napkins, I doubled up on the plaid by adding white linen hem-stitched napkins from Target to break up the color. They have some really nice table linens at decent prices.
For the center, I grouped the aqua pumpkins together with one orange that says, “give thanks.” I used some faux dried leaves that I cut from long stems and arranged them around the pumpkins. Finally, I grouped several votive candles, both orange and clear, around the pumpkins and added some inexpensive white pumpkin pepper and salt shakers.
I had lots of fun putting this together and will be enjoying a few casual dinner parties with friends using this seasonal decor for my table setting.
It is great fun to step outside your usual comfort zone and try something new! Sometimes it takes just one unusual piece–like these aqua pumpkins–to inspire you to create a whole new look. I would love to see what some of you creative folks out there are using to bring a bit of Fall into your home!
Check back in tomorrow to see the perfect outfit for an Autumn dinner party! Hint: it would great with this tablescape!
