A black and white style always works. Winter, spring, summer, or fall, as the song goes…
There are SO many reasons to reach for this no-fail color combo, such as:
- The contrast creates a sharp, crisp style for any season of the year.
- It’s always appropriate. You can wear it for ANY occasion, in any situation.
- Neutrals are always in style!
- It’s easy to accessorize. Adding a third color makes your look unique.
- Use it as a background for a bold color or pattern.
I love color. I tend to choose clothes with color and I have consciously avoided wearing black when I know everyone else will be! Having said that, there are those times when you want to wear the right thing and you don’t want to have to think too hard about it. So–a rule of thumb for those unknown times is: wear black and white.
To illustrate, I worked with a gal who got a new job where the dress code was more formal and conservative than she had worn before. She was really worried about what to wear. A friend of hers told her, “When in doubt, wear black and white.” She was totally correct! You can never go wrong with this color combination.
And there is no reason NOT to style this combination in the summer!
Black and White Style for Summer
I’ve found myself styling the black-and-white style quite a bit lately. It’s just so a no-brainer and always looks put together.
Recently, in the post, Three Ways To Style Capri Pants, I wore white Capris with a black off-the-shoulder top. I also wore this top with white shorts in Cabo. It’s a great way to look stylish and still be cool in the hot weather.
Here I kept to just the two colors, but just by adding bright accessories–say red, or yellow, or bright green–it would completely change the look.
In the post, Classic Blouses, The Backbone of Any Wardrobe, I styled a white V-Neck blouse with black pants. It’s a perfect professional look–just by adding a colored or patterned blazer, you have instant workwear.
A Fresh Take on Black and White Style
While basic black and white always works, it’s fun to play with as a background to other colors. (See my post about Creating a Classic Column Look). And while animal prints look great with color, you can also use them to style up this basic color combo.
Case in point: start this cute zebra print sweater in, you guessed it–black and white!
Sorry, the sweater is sold out!!! Yikes!
Black-and-white with Fuchsia
This simple animal print top looks very cute with basic white shorts. But create instant interest with a pop of color like fuchsia sandals and earrings, and an embroidered floral bag.
A Black and White Look With Red
Red is often used as a foil with black and white outfits. The reason is clear: it looks great! This look is accessorized with matchy-matchy pumps and bag. Easy peasy and so cute!
Animal Print As Accessories
It’s fun to add a second animal print as an accessory to an outfit, and especially with a black and white background. As a “neutral,” you can style leopard shoes with lots of things. To bring out the cognac shade in the shoes, I’m styling a cognac bag.
There is an interesting history on the evolution of black and white fashion by Nicole of High Latitude Style. Check it out! If you’re like me, you are interested in the background for various fashion trends.
