Are you ready for some casual dress inspiration? Dresses are hot, hot, hot this spring. Wonder why? Maybe we are all just a little tired of our leisurewear–cute and comfy as it may be! While we may not be ready to give up on it entirely, most of us are hankering for a little feminine chic.
Dresses for summer are popping up all over, and though we may not be able to wear them by themselves on chilly days, a casual jacket or sweater will work as we transition toward warmer weather.
Speaking of warmer weather, are you longing for some travel? You know, outside our home, the grocery store, our immediate community, or the patio of our favorite restaurant with social distancing and QR-code menus?
With our two vaccinations under our belts, and my son in line for his, we booked a trip to Hawaii this summer! Woohoo! Knowing there will still be some restrictions, we are willing to adhere to them while getting away for a much-needed change.
Several years ago, we took my lovely Mother-in-Law to Maui on vacation. I’m so glad we had that fabulous experience with her. She said she always wondered why we would want to go to Hawaii, as we live in a coastal town, with an ocean view, and mild weather. It was a bit hard to explain, but once we got here, she said, “I get it.” There is just something about the vibe on those islands, along with the warm weather, warm water, and friendly people.
This year, we are headed to Kauai, at Poipu, one of our favorite spots. We haven’t been back for several years as we frequented our favorite Maui location for recent trips. Our son has never been and is in as much need as we are to get away, so we will luckily get to spend time with him. It’s a two-fer trip!
SO, the casual dresses I’m sharing today are perfect for this adventure and will go straight into my suitcase!
Casual Dress Inspiration
Tiered dresses with a looser fit are trending big time this spring. I guess we aren’t quite ready to give up our comfort. We may also want to hide that good ol’ “quarantine 15,” right? Lol!
All three of the dresses featured today are from Old Navy so the price is right and they are right on-trend.
To stay in the lower price range, I styled all of the dresses with the same espadrille mule wedges I featured in the post, Affordable Spring Fashion Finds.
Tiered Swing Dress
It just wouldn’t be spring–or summer-without stripes and this dress has the required thin vertical stripes that show up every year. The swing silhouette is super flattering with an A-line shape. It’s made of a woven cotton/rayon with a full lining so there is no see-through issue. There is a single button at the back neck.
OK, I liked this style so much I also bought the navy version! I just couldn’t decide. The dress actually comes in several colors and patterns so there are lots to choose from. The sizing is consistent and I am wearing my usual size small. The size range includes XS-XXL and I think it would be flattering on almost any body type.
I showed both styles with a denim jacket, both in a medium wash. Mine is an older jacket from Old Navy that is truly a classic.
This cute little shoulder or quilted crossbody bag comes in LOTS of colors. For just under $20, it’s a great little bag to add to almost any look!

Both dresses are perfect for lunch or dinner dates and will be my “dress up” looks for dinners in Hawaii.
Smocked Midi Dress
This super casual dress is one of those that you reach for time and time again. It’s just so comfy and easy to wear–and it has pockets!! Oh, yeah. I can wear this after a day at home in the pool or for a casual dinner party this summer. In the meantime, it looks very cute with a denim jacket. I styled it here with a white one that I’ve had for a LONG time.

It appears that the green floral version has sold out but there are several other colors and patterns with both black and white backgrounds. Check back, however, as Old Navy often restocks popular pieces. All the items, including dresses, are on sale for 25% off, plus any other promotions.
Now for the undergarment requirement. Yes, a strapless bra is necessary unless you can get away without wearing one. (I haven’t been able to do that since my 20s!) After trying several, this strapless bra by Wacoal is my favorite. At $68, it’s a bit pricey, as are most quality bras. You will wear it for several years, as I have, I promise.
I hope you’ve found some casual dress inspiration with these affordable dresses. For dresses you wear for only one or two seasons, you really don’t have to spend a lot to look chic and fashionable.
Sounds like a wonderful plan for vacation! I have never been to Hawaii. Enjoy! I know I am looking forward to going to the beach this year, in Avalon. The idea of new scenery and beautiful beaches is totally needed!
Love these tiered dress on you, they look great on your petite figure.
Iam eyeing the sage green dress, also a lovely look!

Thanks so much, Jess. Yes, there is just something about sitting on a beach that makes everything feel better, isn’t there? Whatever you decide to do, I know a change of scenery is much needed, for sure!

Darlene, these dresses are so cute! I am all about the dresses once it gets warm enough! It is still a tad too cold here for bare legs or arms. Old Navy and Target always offer really cute dresses this time of year. My only issue with the Old Navy ones is that they often have such high necklines which are not so flattering for large busted women like myself. But still wonderful options because I somehow managed to add 16 new dresses to my wardrobe recently all from Old Navy and Target! Haha.

Wow, girl, I am impressed!! 16 new dresses?!! OK, start styling them, my friend. Well, after the snow is truly gone! Lol! Dresses are the BIG thing this spring as we break out of our sweats. Sometimes, anyway…Thanks, Shelbee!

You found some great dresses! Love the green floral dress. I am on the lookout for a dress! How lovely to have Hawaii to look forward to. We went there 15 years ago when my husband did the Hawaii Marathon xx
Thanks, Gail. We are really looking forward to a trip of any kind and a relaxing trip just sounded so appealing. You’d think we’d be ready for a busy trip after a year of relaxing, right? But our hope to visit Europe wasn’t in the cards this year. Darn. Hoping next year is MUCH better for travel and everything else.

Look at you in these beautiful dresses! I really like how you styled them!
