Hosting a holiday party this December? You want to flaunt your style yet still be able to move about and serve as the host, right? So you want an outfit that is both classic and classy. I have just the thing for your December party outfit!
It’s all about the fabrics and textures. Anything in satin looks formal. And festive. But what to pair it with so it’s not too over-the-top? A chunky knit sweater is the perfect foil for satin. A satin skirt is complemented beautifully by a textured sweater, giving off a classy yet stylish vibe.
The post title, December Party Outfit for the Host, comes from the super stylish Anna of Mutton Style, as her choice for this month’s theme for Match Made in Seven. You may recall that Match Made in Seven is a collaboration of seven bloggers from Europe, the UK, and both coasts of the US. Each month one of us chooses a theme and challenges the other members to interpret that theme. The fun comes in the form of seven different interpretations! I love to see how my friends style each theme so differently.
Without further ado, then, the perfect December party outfit for the host…
December Party Outfit
Satin slip dresses and skirts are all the rage. For an elegant evening event, a satin slip dress is just the right mix of sexy and elegance. I shared a leopard version in the post How to Style a Satin Slip Dress for Now and Later. In that post, I styled the slip dress for a summer look followed by a layered sweater on top. With the right accessories, the slip dress is also perfect for an elegant holiday party.
While the satin dress can be styled several ways, there is nothing more versatile than the satin skirt version. These skirts can be styled simply with a tee or sweater and sneakers, or styled up with heels and lots of bling. For today’s look, I’m styling it simply but classically, as a holiday party host might wear it.
In solid shades, the satin gives off a lovely sheen. You can find these skirts in so many rich colors, from soft champagne or blush pink shades to deep rich reds and oranges. As a big fan of emerald green, I feel in love with this beautiful deep green satin skirt and it’s the perfect color for the holidays!
There are lots of ways to style this skirt. For a December party outfit, however, where one is the host, I went with a monochromatic look. (Look for a future post with more ways to style a satin skirt!)
This particular slip skirt is designed with a high waist and side zip. Like most slip skirts, it’s cut on the bias for a flattering fit and look. It comes in two other beautiful colors, a bright pink and a yellow-gold satin. Best of all, it’s machine washable! And it’s on sale!
The Sweater and Accessories
OK, this SWEATER! Walking through Nordstroms recently, I passed this sweater and had to do a quick try-on. It’s by Boden so it is a well-made sweater. I especially loved the gold polka-dots that add a little bling and fun to the sweater.
For hosting a party, sandals are a great choice, like these oatmeal suede heeled sandals. They are my go-to shoes for a dressy look. The chunky heel and ankle strap make them sturdy and comfortable.
Here is a faux fur jacket that I would LOVE. In emerald green, it would make a gorgeously rich monochromatic look with this silk skirt! It comes in four other beautiful colors.
While it doesn’t show up in the photos (grrrr…), I’m wearing an adorable emerald crusted gold bracelet. My earrings are my new favorites–so lightweight! They are from that darn Salon Zinnia and Lifestyle Boutique where I pick up something new every time I get my hair colored! (Which seems to happen more and more often! Lol!)
Are you sold on a December party outfit like this? You can’t beat these gorgeous sating skirts with a sweater for instant holiday style. With a classic look like this, you’ll be hit of the party.

Hi, Jess. Yes, I think I like these skirts better than the pleated ones, too. At least on me. I’m loving all these faux fur jackets, but, like you, I don’t need that many warm coats.
I hope you had a great Thanksgiving. And here comes Christmas!
