In my last post, The Chambray Dress, I discussed the difference between denim and chambray. With the lightweight denim fabrics available now, it truly is hard to tell the difference. In the end, who cares, right? Both fabrics are versatile workhorses, just like this denim maxi sundress that is perfect for summer!
This casually styled dress was named one of the “It” dresses this spring due to its popularity. As I am always on the lookout for fashion that is both cute and comfy, I decided to give this style a try and share it with you.
The Denim Maxi Sundress
Is this dress denim or chambray? The mid-blue shade does look like chambray, but the dress is labeled denim, hence the denim maxi sundress title. You get to pick! Lol!
This dress is boho-inspired and has pockets and adjustable spaghetti straps (always a good thing!). The fit is loose and the length is LONG. To be honest, I wasn’t too sure of this look on me. With my shorter stature, I tend toward more fitted pieces. But hey, the purpose of this blog is to try new things to share, to grow and to explore, and to not get stuck in a clothing or any other rut, so I had to try it.
The style is growing on me! I can see this dress for a home cocktail or party around the pool. It has just enough sass to make it stretch from a beach coverup to a casual party dress. Of course, accessories can definitely change the look.
To illustrate, I’ve accessorized it two ways. One super casual, and one a bit more dressed-up.
Denim Maxi Dress Styled Casually
The flowy boho style is perfect with flat sandals and a straw tote bag, don’t you agree? At the last minute, I decided to add a hat to add that cool casual beachy feel. (Mine is from Erik Javits–pricey, but well worth it for year-after-year use!) For a little pop of color, I tied a small square scarf around my wrist, as I wanted to keep jewelry to a minimum.

Denim Maxi Dress for Evening
Have you noticed all the cute shoes made with clear acrylic material? It’s a great look for the summer months. I have a pair I styled some time ago with my denim maxi shirtdress (yes, I clearly like denim dresses, and yes, I do like shirt dresses! Lol!) and pull them out when I want to up my shoe accessory.
There are also some VERY cute chunky heeled sandals made with acrylic out right now. Check out these sandals from Steve Madden and these heeled slide sandals. Both are trending with clear acrylic straps and both are on sale!
Statement earrings in silver, a silver-toned bracelet, and a chunky chain add some bling. Notice how the jewelry changes the dress from beachwear to evening wear! Oh, yeah!
Other Ways to Style a Denim Maxi
This dress would be a great choice for a July Fourth celebration! As denim looks amazing with red, white, and blue, you could add accessories in those colors Or go all out and wear red shoes, a red, white and blue hat, bold patriotic earrings, or any other pieces you have in your accessory collection.
