Has your casual look taken a bit of a dive lately? I have worked hard since my “retirement” to show some style even though my go-to look is mostly casual. And it does take some work to make it happen! Especially after we pass a certain age! (You know what I mean!) After years of taking off my suit or dress and heels as soon as I got home from work–and for most of the weekend!–I often reached for jeans and a tee and a zip-front sweatshirt. Oh, I did do the occasional dress-up outfit for dinner dates and such, but it felt so good to be comfortable that I fell into a bit of rut. Hence, this blog. My goal is to develop and share outfit ideas with all of you that are both comfortable and stylish. And there is no better way to start than with a basic black blazer.
The Black Blazer and Jeans outfit
The basic black blazer is a workhorse in any wardrobe. The blazer is sometimes identified as part of a capsule wardrobe: a set of basic pieces that constitutes a classic wardrobe. This is also called a “French” wardrobe as many French-style influencers show their beautiful looks made with basic pieces. The most important thing about a blazer is that the fit is flattering for your body type.
This black blazer came with my recent Stitch Fix. I asked for a mix of basic and trendy pieces from various price points. My stylist suggested this outfit and I knew I was going to love it! You can see a similar version here and a little pricier version here.
The olive-green top is sleeveless with a rounded hem that looks great alone or under a blazer or sweater. It is the priciest piece in my Fix but is well-made made of a soft Tencel fabric.
You can see the turn-back cuffs on this jacket with a black-and-white pattern. A nice detail!
The jeans are also a great fit and I really like the step hem with the frayed bottom.
The Stylist suggested flats with an open-toe, but the weather is a bit chilly here (sorry friends in areas where you are REALLY having cold weather!) so I opted for my Ecco slip-ons.
Have you updated your blazer lately? It’s all about the fit, so find a blazer style that flatters your figure. It can really dress up a basic jeans outfit and go from day to evening. A basic black blazer is a must-have for any wardrobe.
If you haven’t tried Stitch Fix, you can see how fun it is to receive and try on new things. There is really no risk–if you don’t like something, just return it. It’s like having a dressing room from your favorite store right in your home! Check it out by clicking on the banner on the sidebar.

Thank you!! I have 2 blazers from her and this style is my fav bc it has a bit more length and more of that boyfriend blazer feel. Love it!
Yes, there is nothing as flattering as a great blazer, is there? Thanks for your comment and have a great week!
Darlene, you’re a doll! I love my classic black blazer but I’m really swooning over those jeans of yours. Love them!
Thanks, Andrea! I am loving them, too. Thanks for the nice comment.
