The Sweater Dress is one of those essentials for fall and winter. Like any dress, the ability to slip it on, add shoes, bag, and go make it such an easy choice on a busy morning. Not only is it an easy choice, but it’s also super easy to style. You can style for a casual day, work, or slightly dressed up for evening. As always, it’s all in the accessories.
The accessories for the two looks I’m sharing today completely change the look of this basic sweater dress. The addition of sneakers and then boots give the outfit two completely different feels. Gotta like a twofer, right?
The Easy-to-Style Sweater Dress
A Casual Look
You’ve gotta love the sneakers-with-everything trend, don’t you? Since we’re all (or most of us, anyway!) looking for all-day comfort, especially for our feet, it’s great to know we can throw on some cute sneakers and still show some style! For this look, I’m styling my Superstar Adidas sneakers in white-and-black. I think almost everyone has or has had a pair of these in their closet at one time or another, right?
The beauty of an all-black sweater dress is the ability to add almost any color or pattern to make it pop. In this case, I’ve tied a basic plaid flannel shirt around the waist to ensure the laid-back, casual look.
For a hands-free bag, I’m styling my belt bag, last seen in the post, How to Style a Plaid Sweater Dress. This is another trend I’m loving for those times when I don’t want to carry a heavy bag. I don’t know about you, but my everyday handbag is pretty full of “essentials” and can get pretty heavy to carry around all day. So, when I don’t need all those important items, a belt bag is a great choice!

A Dressed-up Look
There are so many styles of knee boots this year. Knee-high boots are a style everyone can wear, especially now that they design them in regular, slim and wide to fit everyone’s calf size. Because of my short stature, I decided to try these mid-calf boots. I love the slouchy style and I think they give me a little more leg, something that does help provide some height. What do you think of them? The light fawn suede is a very useful neutral.
Of course, these boots will look amazing over leggings or skinny jeans. Look for that in the future! And for those of you who are already experiencing those cold temps, you can always wear leggings or tights with this sweater dress and a blanket scarf under your coat!
Accessories once again come to the rescue to totally change up this outfit. The leopard neck scarf adds a little fun, along with the drop earrings with amber and leopard.. A faux leather black bag keeps things simple.

Since I’m styling an inexpensive dress, I thought I’d share a few similar affordable dresses. Any of these would give you lots of options for fall and winter style. Take a look here:
Oh, and it’s that time of year when it’s time to add a little red lip. It adds just a touch of drama to your look!
You can see how easy it is to style an inexpensive sweater dress. Just a few changes in accessories can create a fun casual outfit, or make it an evening-ready ensemble.
Oh Darlene, you are too cute! I love a good sweater dress for this season and both ways of styling it are so great. But the adidas with the plaid shirt around the waist is so totally my jam! Love, love, love! Thanks for linking up.

This is a great dress Darlene, love how you’ve styled it. I especially like the second way you’ve styled it. Thanks for adding to the #linkup Jacqui
I knew you would prefer the second styling as I was adding my image to your Link Up party! Lol! Thanks for the feedback, Jacqui.

Amazing how the different accessories totally change the look! A great casual styling with the sneakers, and then with the leopard print this is a dress that could be taken out in the evening! Thanks for linking at #WowOnWednesday my friend.
Hi, Gail. I always tend toward black with a basic dress like this for just that reason–accessories! Thanks for sponsoring the Link Up–I love to see your sense of color and style!

A very versatile dress! Both versions look lovely!

Thanks so much, Michelle. A basic black dress is such an easy piece to work with, isn’t it?

That is a beautiful dress and I love the sporty styled way. The color looks very classy. Of course I like the more elegant styled way too but the sporty one is surprising!
Thanks, Nancy! There’s nothing easier than a simple black dress, is there? I’m starting to love outfits with sneakers at last!
