What do you think of when you think of crisp fall days? A warm cardigan sweater, comfy booties, and of course–jeans! This fall, try something with a new twist: a colorblock cardigan sweater outfit!
Colorblocking is all over this fall, in sweaters, skirts, dresses, and tops. It’s such a great way to style a classic but add a bit of color. Colorblock sweaters offer a great way to warm it up for fall without succumbing to solid black or gray.
Of course, here at the beginning of August, when the temperature is at its highest for the year, it’s hard to think about warm sweaters and booties, isn’t it? Since fall will be here before you know it, however, this is a great time to take stock of your fall wardrobe inventory and think about what pieces you might like to add in preparation.
In some ways, there isn’t a whole lot that’s new. Just some different takes on the typical fall styles. Like mixing colorful plaids, styling monochromatic outfits by combining multiple hues of the same shade, adding another animal print–like snake or zebra–to your leopard print collection, floral dresses in deep fall colors, and adding rich fabrics and super-saturation colors in your outfits.
In addition, the trend to style pieces in new ways continues in order to span the seasons. As I did in the post How to Style a Slip Dress for Now and Later.
Regardless of your current stock, consider adding a bit more fun with the addition of a colorblock sweater.
The Colorblock Cardigan Sweater Outfit
Today’s look features two of my final selections from the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale. The first piece is this adorable colorblock cardigan. The unexpected mix of rust, pink, and oatmeal gives the sweater a pop of color.
New or different colors like these in a colorblock piece is a fabulous way to add interest to an otherwise bland outfit. It’s styled here with a simple white shirt and skinny jeans, elevating the look.
Unfortunately, the sale ended yesterday, so not only have the prices gone up , but many of the items are sold out. Not to worry, though, as the best thing about the sale, really, is the sneak peak into fall fashion. The sale offers us a glimpse into what’s trending for fall. And if you truly love a featured piece, it’s worth it to pick it up, even if the price is a bit higher. Or to find a similar item.

For you Amazon shoppers, I ran across this very cute colorblock version that comes in lots of colors! Check it out!
We all know how versatile a cardigan sweater can be. Super casual with shorts or jeans, casually sophisticated with slacks and a fun top, or styled professionally with heels and a beautiful blouse. I’m styling it casually for this look today, but you can imagine the possibilities, given the colors in the sweater.
Booties came out a few years ago and have been popular ever since. The best thing is that there are now so many well-known comfort brands designing these shoes. The pair I styled with this colorblock cardigan outfit is by Vionic, a brand known for their orthodic support.
I love the slouchy look of this cushy suede bootie with a just-right heel at 1 3/4 inches.
The bag is a piece I picked up in Scotland while on our British Isles cruise. There were a number of these tweed handbags and totes almost everywhere we stopped. I love how the tweed fabric in a taupe shade goes with so many things in my closet, so I expect to get plenty of use out of it! My husband bought me a shoulder bag and wallet that I’ll share in a future post! Love them!
