What colors would you use to describe 2021? While 2020 was decidedly dark, optimism more aptly defines 2021. To honor this optimistic year, I am styling my version of a gray and yellow outfit to illustrate this year.
Read on, dear friends, to see my take on the 2021 colors of the year.
Pantone’s Colors of the Year
Each year, the Pantone Design Institute declares a color or colors of the year. They choose a color each year to reflect the social atmosphere and predict what the year might hold. Their choices tend to define trends in all design including home decor and decorating as well as fashion. This year’s colors are Ultimate Gray and Illuminating.
You may recall last year’s Classic Blue, 2019’s Living Coral, and 2018’s Ultraviolet. For the past four years, since I’ve been blogging, I created posts to demonstrate each of these.
2018 – Ultraviolet: suggests the mysteries of the cosmos, the intrigue of what lies ahead. (Somewhat prescient, right?)
2017 – Greenery: a return to normal. (Wouldn’t that be nice right now!)
Why Gray and Yellow?
The Pantone news release announcing the colors described its choice of Ultimate Gray and Illuminating as follows:
There was quite a bit of backlash by the design industry over these choices of color. In my view, however, I am thrilled. This is another of those color combinations that I really like. I can see why some folks struggle to wear these colors and both gray and yellow can be tricky. But if you find the right hues in each of these colors, you should be able to wear them in some form or fashion.
My Gray and Yellow Outfit Styles
Here are three looks from previous posts where I happily styled this color combo. The first shows how a mustard shade pops against the gray jeans. It’s not exactly the “Illuminating” color chosen by Pantone but does show how this shade of yellow might work for you.
Next, is a floral top with gray jeans with sunny yellow accents:
Lastly, here are the same jeans with a bright yellow floral top:
The last look is the closest shade of yellow to the Illuminating chosen for this year.
My Current Gray and Yellow Outfit
At last! Never one to resist a cute yellow fashion find, I recently picked up this button-front cardigan. (It did take two weeks to get delivered, however!)
It comes in rust, cream, teal, peach, and black, and both Regular and Plus sizes. It’s good quality for the price!
I shared a darling chunky cardigan in the post, Every Woman’s Classic Striped Shirt. You can see I’m currently into button-front cardigans! This time of year as we transition from winter to spring is the perfect season for a cardigan sweater.
I like the slightly boxy shape that is slightly cropped. It would look cute, I think, on top of a dress due to the shorter length.
While I obviously love the gray jeans featured above (lol!) with the slit in the front, I also like these gray jeans from Wit & Wisdom. The fit is great for regular, petite, and plus sizes! Here are some gray versions by this brand: Skinny Ankle Jeans, High Waist Skinny Pants (regular and plus sizes), Plus Size Straight Leg Jeans.
I have versions of these wedge sneakers in tan, black, and gray. They are a step up from super casual sneaks and I find myself reaching for them all the time.
Can you see yourself in Ultimate Gray and Illuminating yellow? What shades of both work best for your coloring? Once you find the right hue, I think you’ll be sold. After all, we need a solid foundation (like gray) and some bright, illuminating color to carry us through this year, right?
