A basic long-sleeve shirt is a staple in most anyone’s closets. The versatility of this shirt makes it a great component in nearly any outfit, be it formal or casual. You can wear a long sleeve shirt in a more laid-back style or style it to dress up an elegant look.
How to Style a Basic Long-Sleeve Shirt
Here are just a few ways to style a long-sleeve shirt:
- Button and untucked over leggings or skinny jeans
- Tied at the tummy
- Tucked into jeans or trousers
- Open, over a tee or cami
- With the sleeves pushed or rolled up
- Under a blazer
- Tucked into and bloused over a pencil or pleated skirt
- Style with a neck scarf or long scarf
There are so many possibilities! Don’t let your basics flounder in your closet. Instead, try to style them in new ways with the pieces you already have.
The Basic Long Sleeve Shirt
Almost any shirt in your closet will work. If it’s slightly oversized, even better.
With the button-front style and a patch pocket on the chest, this denim shirt is a closet basic. While it’s described as denim, it feels more like a Tencel fabric. So it’s soft and comfy.
The shirt has raglan sleeves which tend to give the shirt a looser fit. What is raglan, you say?
Raglan shirts are characterized by the sleeves which extend completely to the collar in one piece. The seam goes from the underarm to the collar. It’s often referred to as a “set-in” sleeve.
For me, this style is especially flattering and I’ll bet it is for you, too. The shirt is very affordable and comes in six colors. I’m wearing the spruce green, defined as “green” online. (The Target person who writes the descriptions keeps color names very basic, so you have to use your imagination sometimes. Lol!)
A Shirt Over a Dress
Take a basic cotton camo print dress to a new level. Simply tie a long-sleeve shirt over it and voila–you have a whole new look! I picked up this comfy dress last year and wear it all the time for casual comfort. Check out the post, Casual Midi Dress for more inspiration.
By just tying the shirt in a coordinating color, this outfit looks totally put together. Of course, a white shirt would look great, too.
I’m styling it with this summer’s “it” sandals, the studded slide sandals by Steve Madden.
Shirt and Jeans Outfit for Fall
A long-sleeve shirt tucked into jeans or chinos is a no-brainer. Just by adding a patterned belt, you up the look.
Cuffed, straight-leg jeans keep the look current. Love these light tan booties (they look lighter in the photo!) with my leopard print belt! (Sizes small through extra-large. Get this belt! It’s a bargain!)
Shorts and a Shirt to Wear Now
Summarize a long-sleeve shirt by rolling up the sleeves and either tucking or tieing it over a cute pair of shorts. If you want a slightly dressier look, wear longer or Bermuda-length shorts.
Here, I’ve styled it with basic denim shorts and sneakers for a super casual look. Can’t beat that, right?
I love to wear my platform leopard sneakers with shorts. Here is a similar pair of leopard print sneakers.
