Lilac is having a moment right now and there’s a good reason for that. It’s such a pretty color on almost everyone! In a gauze lilac top like the one I’m sharing today, it’s totally on-trend for this moment.
That’s because gauze fabrics–a thin translucent fabric of silk, linen, or cotton–are also staging a comeback. It’s the perfect weight fabric for the warmer months and is used in so many items from tops to dresses to beach coverups.
White and black gauze is the quintessential summer choice, but there are lots of other pretty colors to choose from. So when I saw this beautiful lilac top on Andrea’s mom on the blog Living on Cloud Nine, I was hooked.
There is common confusion about the color name lilac and it’s often used interchangeably with lavender. So, just in case you’re wondering about the distinction, here is the explanation!
The main difference between Lilac and lavender is that the Lilac is a pale purple with a pinkish tinge on it while the Lavender is a bluish tinge on it. Lavender belongs to the mint family, Lamiaceae, whereas Lilac belongs to the olive family.
SO, while both are named after flowers, even the flower families are distinct!
Either way, both are very pretty pastel shades, as you can see in this gauze lilac top.
How to Style a Gauze Top
Using gauze for swim coverups is an easy design as most of us don’t mind showing a little bit of our swimsuits underneath. But some of us might not be totally comfortable with the translucent nature of this fabric in other pieces. To remedy this, wear a gauze shirt over a cami top or even a tee. To get extra wear out of a swimsuit coverup that you really like, wear a slip dress underneath.
While many gauze fabrics are very see-through, this top is actually a heavier weight, making this issue less of a problem. I’m not sure you can see my bralette in the photos! I understand the white version might be more see-through.
My remedy for this look is to wear a bralette under the top. By tying a knot at the front, the top stays loose and allows just a peek of this cute lacey bralette in the same lilac shade.
The bralette comes in XS-XXL sizes and offers medium support. It has a halter-style front and a T in the back. You wouldn’t want to go jogging in one of these, but the support is enough for most of us for a lightly scheduled day or event. It also comes in black, ecru, and mauve.
The Gauze Lilac Shirt and Accessories
The Long-Sleeve Core Gauze Button-Down Shirt from Universal Thread™ makes a cool and stylish summertime essential. Made with a cotton-rich fabric, this button-front shirt has a beautiful crinkled texture that pairs well with both casual or dressy bottoms for versatile looks. It’s designed in a relaxed-fit silhouette with a stylish shirttail hem and side vents and a patch pocket on the chest. Button it all the way up and wear it tucked or untucked with your jeans or shorts. You can also wear it unbuttoned over a solid tee to dress up your everyday wear.
Both of these pieces are from Target, making them both cute and affordable. The top comes in several other colors, including white. While the white is currently sold out, keep checking back as they will most likely restock this popular item.
In terms of sizing, the shirt is indeed generous. I am wearing my usual size small and it may be a tad too large to wear over a tee, so I may need to size down.
Another great resource for all things gauze appeared in my last post. The company is Oh My Gauze! If you like gauze, you’ll find something you like in this fabric–the perfect summer weight fabric!
I love blue with lilac so styled an older necklace from Chicos and carried my striped straw clutch.
