The oversized boyfriend shirt is a big trend right now. They remind me of those photos of teenagers in the 50s with their boyfriend’s or dad’s collared shirt over a pair of jeans with sneakers. Well, this look is back again and is so fun and easy to wear! And there are so many ways to style it!
A classic oversized shirt in white or a blue-and-white stripe is the most common, but how about a print? I have a little bit of leopard print in my wardrobe (guffaw!) and I imagine you do, too, but this boyfriend shirt in a soft gray leopard really caught my eye.
Read on for all the details and some styling ideas…
The Oversized Boyfriend Shirt
It’s an inexpensive shirt made with cotton and rayon. It’s a bit thin (which I like), but not see-through, and the material is really soft. When it was delivered, I saw this scrunched-up black thing and thought I wouldn’t like it. But, once I put it on I could imagine all the possibilities! I’ve already worn it several times!
Here are the details, which are typical of an oversized shirt, regardless of the pattern:
- Spread collar.
- Seamed back yoke.
- Long drop-shoulder sleeves, with buttoned cuffs and buttoned sleeve plackets.
- Seven-button placket.
- Hi-lo shirttail hem, with vented sides.
- Soft-washed, woven cotton/rayon blend, with all-over leopard print.
- Cotton and rayon, machine wash and dry (Gotta love that, right?)
How to Style a Boyfriend Shirt
All of the looks here make for great winter-to-spring transitional style. How many ways can you wear this shirt style?
Here are just a few suggestions for styling a boyfriend oversized shirt:
- Cinched at the waist with skinny jeans.
- Tucked, with sleeves rolled up and neck open
- As a swimsuit cover
- Open over a dress
- Tied at the waist with jeans or shorts
- Layered over a tee
- Tucked under a blazer
- Tucked with a pencil skirt.
Wear it to Run Errands
An obvious styling option is to pair it with gray pants. The hi-low hem makes a cute look with a pair of skinny jeans as I have here. This is an easy, everyday look.
A Professional Look
The lightweight fabric is easy to tuck into a pair of black pants. I took the opportunity to wear it with my satin joggers just to show how versatile they are! You first saw them in my holiday post, Style Satin Joggers for a Tuxedo Look. But a sleek pair of black trousers would do the job, too. An oversized “boyfriend” blazer works well on top! A red crossbody bag adds some pop and kitten heels add the finishing touch to a polished professional outfit.
With White Pants
While it certainly looks great with white trousers or jeans, I’ve styled it here with my linen-blend wide, cropped pants for an easy spring look. Neutral kitten heels here and a simple bag complete the look.
An Easy-Breezy Style
Cap Toe Sneakers (red with black–super cute!)
Just for fun, I’ve styled it here with a tie in front. Black jeans and cap-toe sneakers and a fun hat give this outfit an easy feel. This is a new hat style for me, and I’m finding I like it!
If you haven’t yet tried an oversized boyfriend shirt, be sure to give one a try. If you already have one–or two–experiment with all the fun ways to wear these easy-fitting shirts!
