What’s trending in necklaces this year? Yup, what’s old is new again, and layered gold chain necklaces are new again!
Raise your hand if you remember the gold chains trend from the 80s and 90s! Often the image that comes to mind is the macho man with his shirt halfway unbuttoned and big chains on the neck, right? Lol!
In any case, in both of those decades, gold chains were popular for both men and women and I still have several. Usually, they were the real gold kind, so you tend to hang on to those pieces that have some value.
Whether you have real gold chain necklaces or gold plated, there are lots of ways to style this look. It just might be time to refresh your necklace collection. To illustrate, I’m styling some outfits with two of this season’s most popular necklace styles–the initial charm necklace and the gold chunky chain.
Styling Layered Gold Chain Necklaces
The Initial Necklace
In a recent post, I styled the popular “initial” necklace with a tank top and wide-leg pants. You can wear just one initial or add others to create a “charm necklace.” This 90s trend has cropped up over and over in recent decades, so if you have a similar one in your jewelry box, pull it out!
I chose the letter M to signify my last name and my son’s first name–Max. This initial necklace is gold-filled and is nicely made. It’s a nice delicate addition to a chunky chain style.
Here are some other cute styles to choose from:
Style A Chunky Chain
This is a style I have worn often over the years, whether it was trendy or not. A simple chunky chain with a suit or a simple dress is such a classic look. I remember wearing a chunky gold necklace to an interview with a colorblock yellow and tan dress. A solid color provides a great background for this style, but you can also wear one as a choker under a blazer or blouse or over a dress.
Take a look at these chunky chain necklaces for some inspiration:
Wondering which earrings to pair with layered gold chain necklaces? Hoop earrings are another example of “what’s old is new again.” My guess is that you already have at least one pair in your jewelry box. Hoop earrings have long been my go-to. They look good with everything and are perfect for a professional look as they give a clean, neat appearance with a suit or other workwear.
Hoop earrings range in size from tiny ear huggers to the very large hoops we wore back in the day! Ha! Here are some cute ones at good price points:
Like any style of gold necklace, you can wear them with any outfit, from super easy shorts and a tee to a cocktail dress, as in the two outfits below.
For this matchy-matchy pants and vee-neck top outfit, I added both the chunky chain and the initial necklace together. Of course, the sky’s the limit–add as many gold chains as you like!
Layering a couple chain necklaces with a simple dress makes a noticeable statement. This VERY inexpensive floral dress can be dressed up or down and the jewelry really dresses it up!
If you need an easy little dress, this floral dress from Amazon’s Brand Lark & Ro is a cute option. It has kimono short sleeves that many of us like to cover our upper arms and would be a great summer work dress. The quality of this line of clothing is quite good. The dress comes in 6 patterns.
This dress is perfect for that future (who-knows-when) trip. Once travel is normal again (if it ever will be), and you are wondering what to pack, this dress is perfect. You can just roll it up and put it in your suitcase and it won’t wrinkle. Gotta love that, right?
Oh, and did I say it has pockets?!! Score!
If you have any pieces of jewelry, or clothing for that matter, that you love to wear, hang on to it! Naturally, wear what you like regardless of current trends, but know that your favorite things will come back around in time and be a hot “new” trend! Just like the layered gold chain necklace look!
