While I definitely love color (yellow, anyone?), I am a firm believer that a lot of times less is more when it comes to fashion. And the simplicity of denim and black in an outfit is one that always works.
Minimalism is key to pulling this look off. Here are 3 easy ways to hit that perfect, basic minimal look with denim and black:
1.) Choose a pair of great-fitting jeans. Generally, lighter jeans present a more casual look, and darker appear more formal.
2.) While the pieces may be basic, look for detail and structure in one of the pieces, like a blazer or top.
3.) Keep your accessories understated.
Really, that’s all there is to put together a quintessential minimalist look. Minimalist chic works for both casual and elegant outfits.
Here’s how I style a casual minimalist look…
Minimal Chic in Denim and Black
This post is another in my Shop My Closet series. Virtually nothing is new, so I dug into my closet to see what I could come up with.
I started with this cotton top by Michael Stars. This top has been hanging in my closet for three years!! I just couldn’t figure out what to do with it but wasn’t quite willing to give it up. After all, I paid good money for it! Lol! Has that ever happened to you? My girlfriend, Kathi, and I both bought these tops thinking we could do so much with them but could never quite pull it off! She finally got rid of hers (It was NOT bringing her joy! Haha!), but I was determined to wear mine!
So, I gave it One. More. Try.

Me, finally loving this top!
Looking for something to wear with my wide-leg denim jeans, I decided I needed a cute top with a shorter length to complement the looser fit of the jeans. Aha! This was the perfect opportunity to give that ol’ top a try! So, I put it on and decided I like it! It was just the right length and right fit for the look I was going for.
The top is seemingly simple yet the halter style and gathered shoulders give it needed detail. The style of the top does require a strapless bra. This strapless bra is my favorite in case you are in the market.
Wide-leg jeans have really been growing on me. I was a bit late trying them as I’m always worried that I’m too short to pull off the look. But, like anything else, styled correctly, you can wear almost anything.
This pair is super comfortable with a high waist and loose fit. Like all great jeans, they just get better and better with washing and wearing.
Soft leather sandals, also in black, add to the minimal look of this outfit. And they are comfy, too!

If you’re looking for an easy summer sweater, this lightweight sweater is for you. I have them in white and black and use them all summer long. They are perfect for air-conditioned places, like the mall, the grocery store, and the movies. The best part is they’re from Chico’s and are on sale!
For the finishing touches on my casual minimalist look, I kept the jewelry simple. My favorite gold hoop earrings and, of course, my Apple Watch with a leopard band.
Voila! Simplicity at its best!
Are you a minimalist in your fashion choices? While I styled mine with denim and black, you don’t have to limit this look to neutrals. Add some color–your color–to create your own minimal chic.
Hi Darlene!
I love this chic and minimal look! Elegant! I love the drape of the blouse and I do love black with denim. I wear black on occasion, and those wide leg jeans look wonderful. I just bought a pair through thrifting I am excited to style.
The gold hoops are a lovely touch!

Jess, I am really enjoying my wide-leg jeans and I think you will, too. It’s a nice break from all the skinnies. Black and denim is my fall-back when I’m looking for something easy and classic.
Have a great week!

Those wide leg jeans are amazing! I love how you styled them with the black tank! You look beautiful!

Aw, thanks so much for the sweet comment, Ruth! The wide-leg style is a nice change from all the skinnies, right?
Have a wonderful day~

Good to shop your closet! I’m not going to buy anything until mid September now. Have a great weekend!
That’s my goal, too, Nancy. I’ve picked up a few fall things, but mostly inexpensive pieces.
Happy weekend to you, too!
