It’s that time of month, once again, when the Match Made in Seven blogger group collaborates on a common theme. This month’s theme, “My Music Icon,” was chosen by Nancy Baten of Nancy’s Fashion Style. Nancy is the brainchild of Match Made in Seven and not only has an amazing fashion sense, but she has fun with fashion!
Now to that pesky theme. How can anyone pick just ONE music icon when there are so many!? Madonna? Billie Holiday? Sting? Mick Jagger? Yikes, the list goes on and on. After a great deal of thought, then, I am choosing Olivia Newton-John as my music icon.
Didn’t you all absolutely love her in Grease? OMG, she was so adorable! And her music and songs are the kinds you love to sing along to–in the shower, anyway! Lol! I love her for her musical ability and also want to honor her for her incredible strength in her ongoing fight with breast cancer.
Olivia Newton-John: Her Story
Here’s a bit of info on Ms. Newton-John from WikiPedia:
Olivia Newton-John, (born 26 September 1948), is an English-Australian singer, songwriter, actress, entrepreneur, dancer, and activist. She is a four-time Grammy award winner who has amassed five number-one and ten other top ten Billboard Hot 100 singles, and two number-one Billboard 200 solo albums.
Some of her most popular songs include: Have You Never Been Mellow, I Honestly Love You, Magic, and Let’s Get Physical. Do you find yourself humming them in your head? Lol! They are all easily recognizable, aren’t they?
I was surprised to find that she is a fellow Californian and lives in Santa Barbara which is a beautiful area.
You probably know that she survived cancer two times–once in 1996 and then again in 2013. The bad news is that the cancer has returned, reportedly last September. For many years now she has been heavily involved in advocacy for breast health and cancer awareness.
She and John Travolta have been great friends since starring in Grease in 1978 and he reportedly said that the two of them are working on something that will come out soon. Wouldn’t that be wonderful?
Her incredibly positive attitude through all of these trials is admirable and that’s why I chose her for this tribute for My Music Icon.
ONJ in Grease
In terms of fashion, at least for Grease, in her character Sandy she vacillated from prim and proper to cool and bad. And in the 70’s, that meant big, curly hair! I didn’t have the nerve here, but of course, there is actually a Bad Sandy wig!! Check it out:
I wanted to channel her style in some way, and while Grease is only one small bit of her many accomplishments, I gave it a shot here.
I couldn’t manage the hair, even though I do have curly hair. But not that kind of volume!
How to mimic those cool leather leggings? My pair is the faux leather leggings from Spanx that I bought last season. They fit well and are very comfortable–AND they have a nice control top feature. I don’t actually style them THIS way, however!! Haha! I prefer to wear them with a longer tunic style top.
Didn’t you love that off-shoulder bustier she styled in the movie? Well, my version is only a close facsimile with a spaghetti strap tank from Target.
When you picture her as Bad Sandy in the movie, what comes to mind? The MOST iconic piece of all: her leather moto jacket, right? Here is a cute faux leather jacket version. This is one piece that has become a classic. Thank you, Bad Sandy!!
Be sure to check out the “My Music Icon” posts from the rest of the Match Made in Seven group. I can’t wait to see how they interpret the theme! I suspect you might see some Country Western interpretations, but from this gal, it’s Rock n’Roll all the way!
