Happy New Years Eve!
I can’t believe it is truly the last day of 2016. The year has absolutely flown by, hasn’t it? Like so many of you, there have been many changes in my life this year; most notably, and life changing, has been my “retirement” from my educational job of 30 years! As so many folks told me, you do manage to fill up your day when you don’t have to go to your job for 8-10 hours every day, and that is the biggest surprise for sure!
In honor of this year-end bookmark, I will be sharing how I styled three dresses for the formal nights aboard our ship. All of these outfits could be worn for New Year’s Eve, although this year, I am staying in and cooking a Mexican dinner for a small group of friends and family. It has been raining here in SC–a welcome change!–so I am doubly glad that we didn’t plan to go out.
By far, the most versatile and easy dress I brought along is this “Traveler’s” style from Chico’s. You can absolutely throw this dress into a ball and it comes out looking great. As you can see, it is a version of the “cold-shoulder” style and I felt very comfortable wearing it. I will be able to use this dress for many occasions, so it was worth the price, and I believe I used a 30% coupon at the time.
As this dress is made of spandex, it is pretty form-fitting, so I am not afraid to tell you all that my trusty Spanx came to the rescue! I have taken to wearing the “Higher Power Short” version which goes up to your bust and really helps create a slimming line. Much needed with spandex material!
Once again, getting proper lighting for picture taking in our stateroom was a challenge, so forgive the rather poor quality. My shoes are the peep-toe and open-sided Lucky Brand suede ones you have seen before. They are comfortable and trendy, and give this look a little “edge.” The dress would also look great with heels!
The statement necklace and earrings are from Talbots that I bought a year ago and go with many looks.
My best wishes for a safe and happy New Year’s Eve celebration whether at home or out, or with or without friends and family. This is a great time to remember all the good things about the past year and imagine the great things to come.
As promised, here are the two other formal looks I styled on our cruise. The first is a sparkly little dress I picked up at SteinMart, which we now have here in San Clemente. It was less than $60 and, after turning it inside out, it packed easily into my packing envelope. The jewelry pieces are inexpensive ones I also purchased at SteinMart. As it was sleeveless, and the ship’s dining room was chilly, I knew I needed some sort of wrap, but I couldn’t find one in just the right shade. (The dress was a rosy taupe color, which I love, but challenging to coordinate with.) While in our local T.J. Maxx, I saw this unusual infinity scarf and knew it would be complementary. What a find! I believe I picked it up for $14.99! Scored!
The shoes, of course, were more expensive than the outfit, but shoes are so fun, aren’t they? I purchased these nude Louis et Cie at Nordstrom and they go with everything, so will get lots of wear.
And finally, here is a dress that I bought a few years ago from J. C. Penney of all places! I found it online and it was a bargain so I ordered it to wear to a wedding. The sparkly look made it perfect for a formal dinner. Once again, Spanx to the rescue! The shoes are the Steve Madden chunky heel that is trending right now, and I was able to wear the silver with many looks on our trip. I added the choker necklace, which is also trending, an inexpensive piece from T.J. Maxx. The bag is one I bought at Nordstrom last year and can be worn as a clutch or with the chain as a shoulder bag, as shown here. Very versatile and I love the marbled silver and black.

Once again, happy New Year’s Eve! Have a safe and wonderful time celebrating the successes of 2016.
