Really, is there anything easier than that little black dress in your closet? The only decisions to make are what shoes to wear. And what accessories to add. I have a few in my closet, mostly for winter, so I was thrilled to find this dress in my last Trunk Club selection. For today’s look, I am styling it simple and classic as an outfit to wear right now. In the fall, I’ll show a couple of other ways to style this simple dress.
Do you know where the name for the “little black dress” comes from? Fashion historians trace the origins of the little black dress to the 1920s designs of Coco Chanel. It was a simple look intended to be long-lasting, versatile, affordable, accessible to the widest market possible and in a neutral color. It’s so well-known that it’s now referred to as the “LBD”. In the 1920’s of course, it referred to the sheath style worn by flappers and has evolved over the years. Today, it’s often a short, simple cocktail dress. Which fits the description of this LBD perfectly.
The little black dress (LBD)
The fabric of this LBD is a crepe-like material. It has a pleated front with a split neck and a curved hem. The beauty of this dress lies in its simplicity. You can easily dress it up or down which fits the description of “versatile” to a T.
Of course, what could look better with basic black than animal print heels, right? I’ll bet you have a pair of some type of animal print shoe in your closet. Right now, I have only these heels (similar here and here) and the mules I’ve been styling (see them here), but I have my eye on some super cute slingback pumps (check them out here) that would be comfortable for professional events where I am on my feet all day.
The curved hem adds a nice detail to the hem. Of course, it also makes it appear shorter! This is a petite 6, so it may actually be better, or at least a bit longer, in a regular 6. At less than $60, this dress is priced right, too!
Gold jewelry looks especially striking with a little black dress. The necklace, earrings, and bracelet are by Kendra Scott. I love her pieces. The necklace has an adjustable slide so you can adjust the length you want for each outfit. Love that feature.
