OK, we aren’t going anywhere special for New Year’s Eve this year, but I don’t care. I’m wearing a sequin skirt! Just because.
Because there’s nowhere to go but I still want to feel festive! Because it will signal the end of a truly unbelievable year. Because the end of this year is in sight! Because I don’t want to wear sweats or jeans or leggings. Not one. more. time.
Well, not THIS year at least. I will very soon resort to my uniform pieces of jeans, sweats, and sweatshirts, leggings, and other comfy styles as I await my turn for the vaccine. While I know that won’t be the end of it all, it will be a big indicator of changes to come. Change is a good thing anytime, but in 2021 it can only be for the better.
And what better way to celebrate the change from 2020 to 21 than with sequins. Nothing like bright and blingy to lift one’s spirits and create that party feeling. So, read on my friends, for a little new year’s spirit.
The Sequin Skirt
This sparkly sequin skirt is from Express, my new favorite store for well-fitting clothing that is super chic and affordable, too!
When I saw this skirt, I thought, ‘Nope, I don’t need that this year.” But I kept thinking about it (has that ever happened to you?), and finally went back for another look. Naturally, it had sold out. I looked for it another time and it had been restocked–clearly a pretty popular skirt!
Of course, the skirt has a cute style that is flattering due to the ruching on the side, but the main attraction is definitely the sequins. In my wondering about where sequins came from, I came across this explanation from Threads Magazine:
“Sequin” originated from the Arabic word sikka, meaning “coin,” later becoming the Venetian word zecchino. In the late 16th century, it morphed into the French word, sequin. Formal gowns and suits were embellished with polished disks of metal throughout history, requiring hours of hand sewing by seamstresses.
Isn’t that cool? I never knew where or when the term came from, and I do find the origins intriguing. How about you?
Like almost every other clothing store, Express has amazing sales and even in “normal” times, offer some good deals frequently.
The sequin skirt is available only in small sizes, but they also have some other fun versions, if you are in the market, like this Ruffled Sequin Skirt and this Tie Front Sequin Skirt (under $15 and available in lots of sizes!) Hey, why not pick one up while they’re so inexpensive–just in case!! Lol!
How To Style A Sequin Skirt
I’ve styled some other items from Espress over the last several months, including:
White paperbag pants and a snakeskin-trimmed top in How To Style a Paperbag Waist Pants Outfit
Black Knit Jumpsuit in The Knit Jumpsuit Circa 2020 and 2021
While the pieces featured are likely no longer available, there is always a newer, better version of them at Express.
I’ve styled it two ways here, just for fun. First with a chunky somewhat casual white sweater for a somewhat laid-back look. Well, as laid-back as you can get sporting silver sequins! Lol!
The sweater is a Target find from last season, but here is a cute and inexpensive cable knit sweater in cream that would look great. It is a cropped sweater, which actually works better if you want a half- or quarter-tuck look.
For the second look, I styled it with this pretty satin-like blouse in gray. I love the balloon sleeves, the high neckline, and the tie in the back. The fabric drapes beautifully and creates an elegant look. It also looks amazing with jeans! It comes in black and ivory, too, at a great price.
While wearing stockings with sandals is a fashion no-no, I decided to go for it! I wanted the silver shoes with the silver sandals and that’s all there is to it!! As in everything, we should choose and wear whatever we like and whatever makes us feel good!
The Stockings
In both outfits, I’m wearing stockings. Yes, stockings!! This is unbelievable as I haven’t worn stocking in ages!! As soon as the trend moved to bare legs, I went totally in. But I wanted something with a silvery sheen and this pair of “Gloss” Control Top stockings in silver from Nordstrom is exactly what I was looking for! They also come in Black and Fair shades. I just might add another pair!
For your next big occasion, add some sequins just to show how wealthy you are! Lol! Don’t forget the red lip–required for any outfit where you want to add a bit of drama or classic elegance. Let’s turn the corner on this “unprecedented” year with a bit of bling and lots of optimism!
Darlene, you look so fancy and fabulous in this gorgeous sequined skirt! I love both ways you have styled it. I would definitely wear it with a chunky warm sweater though because I am too cold in the winter for just a silk blouse! And you know I love the history of anything fashion related…imagine how heavy the first sequin embellished clothing was with metal discs sewn onto them! Thanks for sharing and linking with me, my friend! Cheers to better days in the new year!

Haha! Yes, anything for fashion, right? We are SO lucky that plastic came along–at least for sequins! I really liked it with the sweater, too, and think I could get more wear out of it that way. Thanks so much, Shelbee!

Here, here! I am 100% with you. I was sitting here last night pouting about nowhere to go and then I thought, NO, I am going to put some make-up on and wear my dress. And you know what I felt better right away. I love that you went back and snagged that skirt. it’s such a great addition to your closet and every time you need a little glam you have it right there in your closet.

Haha! I love this, Bo. Good for you! It really does help to just dress up and put on some make-up, for sure! I’m glad I picked up this skirt, too, cause I think I will wear it a lot in the next years! Hopefully, even this year! Here’s to a much better 2021–a year where we really will have places to go!! My very best wishes,
xx Darlene
