Hello from Portland, Oregon!
I hope you are all having a wonderful week. Today, as promised, I will be sharing some of the must-see spots in Portland and just a bit about what to wear when you want to look cute and stay cool.
First off is the Waterfront Bike Path. The first night we stayed at a hotel on the river and took advantage of the free hotel bikes to ride along this scenic path. The path is eight miles long and runs right along the Willamette River. Along most of the path, you will find wild blackberry bushes. These bushes are everywhere in this part of the country and are often considered a pest by homeowners who consider them unwelcome in their gardens! We stopped several times to take advantage of this bounty and they were really good!
We then moved on to the Benson Hotel in the Pearl District. The Benson is a historic hotel. As a child, my husband always wanted to stay there, so we did! It is a beautiful traditional hotel that is beautifully maintained with great service and a great old-time bar! So fun!
While downtown, we walked to several other iconic spots. We always visit Powell’s Bookstore in the Pearl District. Named Powell’s City of Books, it is the largest used and new bookstore in the world, occupying an entire city block and housing approximately one million books. I always pick up a book there for me, my husband and my son. It’s just too good to pass up buying at least one, but it is difficult to choose with so many books!
A really fun spot is Keller Fountain Park. Portland has many family friendly fountains for kids and anyone else to get wet in. Another fun feature is the more than 50 drinking fountains located in the downtown area. They are called Benson’s Bubblers after Simon Benson, a philanthropist, who donated $10,000 in the early 1900’s for this purpose.
With all the heat, I wore cool and comfy clothes, including this great top from Stitch Fix that I absolutely LOVE. My denim shorts are by Wit and Wisdom and have a nice stretch to them so they don’t gap at the waist. My shoes were a recent necessity due to the ankle issue I am having. They are VERY pricey, by Arche, a French company. They are handmade and have a stabilizing bar in the base with a slightly raised heel filled with gel. They are SUPER comfortable and you can view them here if you need a really well made and comfortable shoe.
I hope this post inspires you to visit a new city or even plan a trip to Portland. We tend to travel abroad quite a bit but there are so many amazing places right here in the US, too!
What is your favorite city to visit?
