As we’ve had rain and grey days with only a few sunny days in between, it’s hard to think about summer. But it will be here before we know it. It’s time to start thinking about the long, lazy days of summer, so I’m sharing some cute outfit ideas for a casual shift dress.
The shape of a shift dress is its main appeal. Loose-fitting yet slightly skimming the body makes for a flattering, easy fit. Like so many super casual styles, these dresses are also easy to dress up or down, as the occasion requires. Maybe not to0 fancy, but certainly for a date night out or lunch and shopping with the girlfriends.
I know that, too, sounds far away given our current countrywide (and in many cases, worldwide!) “shelter-in-place” policies, but the time will come when we really can get out and about. I know you are all as ready as I am. I will never again take for granted the ability to move freely about, to meet with friends, to go out to dinner, to actually shop at the mall…and so on.
While these dresses are sleeveless, which definitely sounds like summer style, you can easily add a jacket or sweater if you’re having the kind of cool weather we are here along the coast. So, it’s a great spring-to-summer transition piece.
Outfit Ideas for a Casual Shift Dress
As this dress is SO affordable, I actually bought it in two variations. It comes in 10! There are three tie-dye, 5 solid-colored dresses, and the stripe and camo versions I show here. Here are the many colors and patterns:
Now, I am not a salesperson for Target, but I just had to share this find with all of you, as it’s perfect for a casual spring or summer look.
Here I’ve styled it with my Free People Mont Blanc Asymmetrical Sandals. These are super comfy and I love the casual look and feel. They come in lots of colors.
For a cool day, I added my natural-color utility jacket. Check out this surplus jacket, this Utility Jacket, and this Chore Jacket as cute alternatives. All have that rugged look that is so cute paired with a dress or skirt.
Striped Shift Dress
When spring is here, stripes just call to me. I’m guessing that’s true of most anyone, as stripes are always popular when the warmer weather arrives. Described as a “light pink” striped dress, I think it tends toward red, and the stripes are just right paired with white sneakers.
Sneakers continue to trend, especially in white, but there is a shift toward colored sneakers out there and they look pretty fun, too. Something on my wish list!
This super cute macrame belt adds some definition at the waistline. I like it both ways. What do you think? As sometimes happens when you buy two of the same style, the striped dress is a bit more snug. I bought both in my usual size small, so you may want to try two sizes.
What could be better than a classic denim jacket over a summer dress? Not much. The stripes and denim are such a natural fit.
With both outfits, I’m wearing my rattan earrings. I love this natural look with spring and summer pieces!
