Is it hot, hot, hot where you live? Really, there is nothing you can wear except a comfy pair of shorts, right? How about a pair of pineapple shorts and tee? Nothing can be better when it’s too hot to think about how to dress during a heat wave.
Whew, it has been so unbelievably hot all across the country. This weekend we got ours. Along the coast here in SoCal, the usual summer temps are in the 70’s with warmer days in the 80’s. But we actually went into the 90’s over the past several days. This isn’t actually unusual as we do get a couple of hot weeks, usually in August, so it came early this year. And for once we were ready!! We had to replace our old furnace this past week so we also had air conditioning installed! And right on time! We’ve lived in our house over 20 years and it hasn’t been until the last few years that we have considered getting air installed. Either it’s getting hotter or we are getting older. How about both?! Haha! In any case, we are glad to have it during this hot spell.
The back story on shorts
So, on the issue of wearing shorts at “our” age. I was at my weekend Circuit training class this past week (at Casa Romantica overlooking the ocean and pier so it’s a no-brainer to get out of bed and go!), and a sweet gal told me I looked good in my shorts. Well, I know that my legs are spotted and dotted and sun damaged as can be and I said so. But I told her that when it’s hot, I do wear shorts. She had on full-length yoga pants, like all the other ladies, and said she didn’t look good in shorts. OK, you know how I feel about that!! I’ve written several posts about flaunting our legs proudly. (Read one here.) Does the phrase “These are the best legs I’ve got so I’m wearing them” sound familiar? (I am nothing if not redundant!! Lol!)
I was thinking about where I got that particular expression and it suddenly came to me. If any of you are educators you will know this name: Rick DuFour. Rick (who has sadly passed away recently) was a very popular speaker and writer on educational practices and based his work on his own practice as a high school principal and superintendent. He was a proponent and developer of the “Professional Learning Communities” initiative, advocating for teachers working together to develop and implement best practices. (I actually got to know Rick and his wife, Becky, so I feel I can call him by his first name.)
Anyway, one of his many catchy statements (he had several) was about the kids that come to your school or your classroom. He said, “The parents send you the very best kids they have–they didn’t keep the good ones at home–so you have to work with what you’ve got. Of course, most teachers do work with their students out of love for kids, but this hit home to all who heard him. So, I guess I copied Rick DuFour’s thinking when I started writing about my leg and shorts issue. NOT on the same par, to be sure, since I’m talking about legs and he was referring to kids, but you get the idea…
So, I did encourage my workout friend to wear her shorts. I told her a way shorter story, of course!
And now, for the “nothing” outfit!
The pineapple shorts and tee outfit
This pineapple shorts and tee outfit is a bit of a “nothing” outfit. Isn’t it what most of us wear in the summer? Or on vacation? And for the hot weather, I will actually don a pair of shorts that are shorter than usual. Especially when they have cute little pineapples on them! I picked these up at a big discount a couple of months ago as I couldn’t resist the pineapple pattern. SO cute!
My pair is from Old Navy and you know how fast things sell out there–and just about everywhere else! So here are some options if you are interested in pineapple-patterned shorts:
White background with tassels (Romwe)
You, dear reader, also know by now that I love yellow–even this pale yellow. This very basic tee is also a bargain purchase as who can’t use a basic tee–especially in one’s favorite color–right? You can view a similar pale yellow (and other colors) here.
And flops? Are they a summer staple or what? I have several pairs of these and replace them regularly. I’m a bit bummed at present as my ankle surgery from last fall comes back to haunt me if I wear totally flat shoes for any length of time, so I wear them as long as I can. When it’s hot, flip-flops are the only way to go. Here is a great pair by Crocs in white. They do have a bit of support in the sole.
So that’s it for today. Wear your shorts!! Pick up a pair of pineapple shorts and tee. And Stay Cool in this heat.
Until next time…
You look super-cool in your lemon and white, it’s a summer combo I love. Yup, I’ve been wearing much of the same as the UK’s been basking in a rare heatwave too. Apropos legs, you have a great pair! And apropos everything to do with MY body (including legs, which are pretty awful) I have a similar mantra, that what I’ve got right now is as good as it’s going to get. My legs will get veinier and my knees uglier in years to come so, wear the shorts now! Hugs, x
Thanks, again, Mary. Love your blog, too!
Best,
Darlene
