Since plaid is big for fall, I’m styling another look for a plaid shirt outfit. Rather than just plain blue jeans, these corduroy skinny jeans give the outfit some color in one of fall’s most popular shades: rust.
You’ve probably noticed how much rust-colored fashion there is available right now. That’s because it goes with so many colors and most of us can wear it. Those of you for whom rust is NOT a good color, you can always add some to your outfit away from your face like with these jeans. Or possibly in a belt or scarf.
Rust or orange is beautiful in fabrics featuring navy blue as in my recent post, Plaid Midi Dress and Booties for Fall, and in an earlier post, featuring a colorful camp shirt. In some cases, it looks amazing with black, as in blogger Catherine Summer, of Not Dressed as Lamb’s post, A Slouchy Black and Orange Dress, Nothing to do with Halloween. She stressed she would NOT wear it around Halloween! Lol! Love her English tongue-in-cheek humor!
Styling a rich color like rust, then, is easy to do as in this plaid shirt outfit.
The Plaid Shirt Outfit
The Jeans
Besides the rich color and the soft corduroy fabric (who doesn’t like corduroy for Autumn?), is the button detail. Honestly, I wasn’t sure this button front would work for me, but there is just enough stretch in the corduroy fabric to make it not only doable but comfortable.
Raise your hand if, like me, you can’t stand pants that are too tight, that you have to do calisthenics in just to get them on! Some of you of a certain age may remember the jeans we wore in our teens–the fabric wasn’t as nice then and they didn’t use stretch making it necessary to lay on the bed or dance up and down in order to wriggle into them! Haha! Can any of you relate?
While the rust jeans are the color popping point for this outfit, the pretty colors in the basic plaid shirt compliment them nicely. So although the shirt is a basic button-down style, the colors make it stand out from the usual black and white flannel shirt.
The Plaid Shirt and Turtleneck
This super versatile rust turtleneck is sleeveless, making it perfect to wear as a bottom layer under a blazer, sweater or sweatshirt. Just about anywhere you need a light layer, as the fabric on this top is very lightweight. For those of you who like to style this type of shirt casually as a shirt jacket over jeans, you can just wear the shirt open over a tee or a lightweight sleeveless turtleneck like this to keep it from becoming too warm.
It’s super affordable at $12.99 and comes in black, white, gray, and this rust shade.
While the styling of this plaid shirt is traditional, the beautiful combination of rust and pink manages to give this plaid shirt outfit a feminine look. Love that!
Keeping it Casual
It appears the sneakers-with-everything trend is here to stay. Well, really, it’s always been, right? But now it’s a huge trend! As this outfit is totally casual, white leather sneakers are a natural choice. (You may notice my shoelace is undone on the right. My darn photographer didn’t catch it. But I can’t fire him, so we’ll just pretend you don’t see it, ok? Lol!)
The comfort of the shoes, the jeans, the turtleneck and the plaid shirt make this an everyday outfit that’s so easy to wear. And the best part, it has some color that pops! Take your cords and shirt outfit up a notch by adding some fun color in your traditional plaid and in your jeans!
Rust is such a great color for Fall. And I always love plaid any time of year. Such a great outfit with the cute corduroy and sneakers!

When fall rolls around, it’s always plaid and corduroy, right? Lol! Even though our fall season is generally pretty warm. I’m loving the rust shades this year, as you can tell from my posts!! Thanks, Shelbee.

Jacqui, thank you for the nice comments. Layers are such a great choice for fall, aren’t they? Are you loving the rust as much as I am? Perfect for fall.

This color is so great for fall! It looks great on you! I love those pants!
Thanks, Laura. As I said, I’m surprised that I like the button front, but they’re really comfy and offer a nice detail. I might be going a bit overboard with all the rust!! Lol!

Like the colours of your outfit, Darlene. A turtleneck under the shirt adds some elegance to the outfit.

Thanks so much for your comment, Anna. I never thought of the turtleneck adding elegance, but you are so right! I also didn’t think rust was a great color on me, but with so much of it out there this year, I tried it, and now I love it!
Have a great day!
