The camisole, or cami, is an essential part of any woman’s wardrobe. The simple design of a cami makes it a basic piece with a lot of potential for building a variety of outfits. For example, the silky versions make great going-out pieces, while the thin cotton ones are great for layering under sweaters for a little added coverage.
Just as slip dresses have been a hot trend, so, too, have camisoles. But don’t expect this versatile feminine top to become unfashionable anytime soon.
How to Style a Camisole
Here are some tips for styling a camisole:
- Layer a silky camisole under a jacket or sweater for a professional look
- Tuck it into a full or floaty skirt for a sexy, feminine look
- Style a cotton cami under a sheer top or sweater to create a slim silhouette and to provide added warmth
- Style it with wide-leg or boyfriend jeans for a contrast of masculine and feminine
- Wear a cami under your favorite kimono, as I did in the post Two Casual Outfits for New Years Eve, for instant style
- Add accessories to accentuate your neckline and decollete
A few other tips to consider include wearing a well-fitting strapless bra (see my favorite strapless bra here) underneath and opt for a looser, relaxed-fitting camisole. That way, you emphasize the floaty quality of this top.
Camisoles aren’t just for dressy occasions either. They make a great piece with a simple jeans outfit, as I’ve illustrated here…
The Camisole Outfit
First, let me tell you that you can pick up a cami almost anywhere for a very affordable price. Of course, you can also opt for one made of silk, satin, or velvet or one made with gorgeous lace for an investment piece. You will wear it over and over, I promise you!
The cami shown here is VERY inexpensive. And how could you go wrong with a leopard-print camisole? Like my leopard print slip dress in the post How to Style a Slip Dress for Now and Later, I expect to get a healthy return on my cost-per-wear for this top. Be sure to pick one up with adjustable straps for the best fit.
You may notice that I am once again styling a fashion piece in brown. I love the rich shades of brown–they are so versatile with so many colors. This open “honeycomb weave” sweater is a perfect layering piece. Just throw it on and go!
Darker jeans provide a neutral background for this look and let the contrasting brown sweater and leopard print pop. These are by Paige jeans, who makes great-fitting jeans with just the right amount of stretch.
Per the tip listed above, don’t forget to accentuate your neckline when wearing a camisole. You could wear a single choker, a series of gold or silver strands, or an adjustable lariat style necklace that can do all three!
This faux leather double O ring belt comes in lots of colors. It’s a great piece to style with your favorite jeans.
If you have a camisole (or more than one!) in your closet, pull it out and play with the many ways you can style this versatile top. You can restyle older outfits and create new looks with just one camisole!
