Have I been styling scarves a bit much lately? That’s because they are an easy and inexpensive way to turn any outfit stylish. When we talk about transition pieces, a scarf is a perfect choice as it can easily turn a summer outfit into one that is quintessentially fall. Today, I am sharing how to style a belted draped scarf for an autumn feel.
The colors of autumn are subtle yet rich, in tones of rust, bronze, mustard, burgundy, olive and forest green, and every shade of brown. And at least a few of those shades, or at least versions of those shades, work for everyone. The fabrics don’t have to be heavy or weighty, they just have to have color to give your look a taste of fall. And I have found a gorgeous square scarf that can be tied so many ways, allowing you to create all kinds of outfit variations. And, when belted, the scarf serves as the center point for your look.
How to style a belted draped scarf for an autumn feel
This trendy belted draped scarf look is so easy to do! Just follow these steps:
- Fold a large square scarf almost in half diagonally, leaving a bit of “tail” overlapping so one side is a bit longer than the other.
- Drape the folded scarf over your shoulders until the back tail is hanging at the length you desire.
- Adjust the front of the scarf so that the sides are nearly touching.
- Cinch in the scarf with a belt along your natural waistline. You can have the belt enclose the scarf in the front and the back, or leave the scarf in the back outside the belt. Either way looks great!
The scarf that I chose is called Golden Apple Multi and it is lovely, don’t you think? Since I am a mustard gal, the colors really appealed to me. Rust is a trending shade for fall, but not a great color on me, so the subtle rust paisley in the scarf gave me enough of that shade to pull it off. And it made the basic rust tee underneath come to life.
This scarf is a lighter weight fabric, but you can do the same thing with a blanket or heavier weight scarf when it gets closer to winter.
Basic tan jeans make a nice backdrop for the scarf, but you could easily punch up the color with a pair of burgundy jeans or slacks. And of course, dark jeans would also look great.
Since the belted draped scarf is an autumn piece, booties are a natural choice in shoes. These “oak” colored booties are a nice neutral with the outfit. Any tan or cognac booties would look super, as would a pair of cute sneakers! Like the super cute sneakers I styled in this post last week.
This outfit could easily serve as workwear, too. A lovely, colorful belted draped scarf would look polished and professional. Just styling the scarf with slacks and heels and possibly a turtleneck would be perfect for the workplace or a work event. I will be wearing this for my consulting work for sure.
I’ll bet you have a large patterned scarf in your wardrobe already. Just follow the steps above and take a basic outfit from plain to fall fantastic! Try a belted draped scarf look to really make your outfit pop.

This is such a lovely idea. I don’t normally wear belts but this would be a great to do that and also have a “coverup.” Thank you. It also adds a touch of color and interest to a neutral outfit.
Hi Elizabeth,
So true! You can easily take it off and throw it over your shoulders if it gets chilly, or just pull it down across the shoulders. It really is so versatile. You are so right that scarves are a great way to add color to a neutral outfit.
Thanks for the lovely comment! Happy hump day.

Hi Jess,
Yes, it’s such an easy way to make full use of the scarves in your closet! This was an inexpensive belt but I chose it cause it can be adjusted. There are some great ones out there–I’ll be watching to see what you choose!
Happy Wednesday!

Love this idea! The belt secures the scarf so both your hands are free. Brilliant! Will have to give it a try.
