A poet shirt (also known as a poet blouse or pirate shirt) is a type of shirt made as a loose-fitting blouse with full bishop sleeves, usually decorated with large frills on the front and on the cuffs. While this one doesn’t have the frills, it fits the description, even though we’re not going for the pirate vibe. Arg.
The beauty of this style is its versatility. You can wear it loose over jeans for a boho look or tucked with a belt. Best of all, it looks great on all body types from petite to plus size ladies. If it seems too voluminous, as it could on a shorter frame, do a slight or quarter-tuck as I show here.
So, where to wear a poet shirt outfit? This would make a great outfit for shopping. Not too dressed up, but with a few touches that take the look up a notch or two. After all, don’t we all need opportunities to dress up just a bit? Haven’t we all gravitated to more “comfy wear” as we’ve been sticking closer to home? So, if you’re like me, you look for any excuse to actually put an outfit together, even for a trip to the grocery store!
Of course, if you’re shopping at home, on your computer (and aren’t we all!), wear the top loose over your most comfortable pants. Comfy slip-ons like these Ugg slide slippers would also work! (They are my favorites for adding just a touch of warmth to my toes around the house!)
Poet Shirt Outfit
This particular shirt is an affordable pick from Target. Just the thing for everyday style that isn’t too expensive.
This long-sleeve blouse features a boat neckline with a front button-down closure that makes it easy to wear and style and has elasticized cuffs that give it a more polished look. Keep it simple by pairing it with your favorite jeans and sneakers, or tuck it in with a skirt and boots for a fun, dressier twist.
The top also comes in cream and a pinkish-red check (cute for the holidays!) as well as a couple of floral patterns. The fabric is lightweight–soft and flowy.
I’ve mentioned these Itty-Bitty Bootleg jeans before and continue to love the look. They have a flattering waist and just enough of a bootleg to add shape to your figure. The slight flare tends to pull the eye down and give proportion to your figure. Gotta love that, right?
You might remember these jeans from the post Layer this Fall with a Lightweight Poncho. That look illustrates a simple boho style.
I’m on the shorter side at 5’3″, and if I can wear these, anybody can. That includes my plus size friends. Women with all body types seek out Wit & Wisdom clothing, particularly the brand’s famous “Ab-solution” jeans, which offer slimming, shaping and lifting in all the right places. The dark wash is the most slimming.
I love tortoiseshell accessories! They provide a little extra to most any outfit in their neutral earth tones. Are you tired of seeing this leopard print belt? Lol! Honestly, for such an inexpensive accessory, I get a LOT of wear out of this. And a leopard print belt can really up the ante on a pair of jeans. The leopard print wrap bracelet is the same–used and loved a lot!
However or wherever you go shopping, do take advantage of every opportunity to show your style to the world. You’ll feel better knowing you made an effort to put together a look that is flattering and shows off your fashion sense!
