Can you believe that Memorial Day is this coming Monday?! Yikes, the time is flying by. To honor the traditions of this holiday, I am styling a striped midi dress in red and navy.
A lot of ladies say that they want to dress festively for these national holidays, but don’t want to look like they’ve wrapped themselves in the American flag. Haha! I get that. A dress like this casual red and navy striped may have the old stars and stripes (minus the stars), but it also reflects a nautical style dress that can be worn all summer long.
The Striped Midi Dress
This is a fitted cotton dress with a touch of spandex and a side slit for easy movement. It can be hard to find this style of dress without a low neck so the higher crew neckline is a nice change.
It also comes in cream and black, and black and white. At less than $25, it’s a great value for summer or your upcoming vacation.
Disclaimer: Crazy coastal wind!! Ugh!! I meant to style this dress with a denim jacket but forgot to take the photo. The denim looks great with this fitted style.

The Shoes and Bag
These cut-out slide sandals were super popular last year and continue to trend. I have them in tan and black and wore them a lot last summer and plan to do the same this year! They come in 8 colors.
I picked up this adorable beach tote with navy pompoms from Talbots last year. You can find a highly rated similar tote bag here. (And it’s on sale for $30!) And this other tote trimmed with lots of colorful pompoms is so cute!
The Hidden Accessories
Like all of you, I prefer dresses and tops with straps that are wide enough to allow me to wear a regular bra. This year there seem to be quite a few tops and dresses with a narrowing in the back–not quite a racerback, but enough to show your straps. Some ladies just go with that and let their straps show–some even flaunt theirs or sport matching or colorful bra straps to highlight it. If that works for you, go for it!
If that bothers you, you can always wear a strapless bra. I’m linking here to my favorite strapless bra. These bras are a bit pricey, but they do the job. I’ve had mine for a couple of years and when I need to wear a strapless bra, this is my choice.
Another alternative is to use a bra strap clip. Have you tried these? They are a small plastic disk that you can use to pull the straps in tighter at the back. While I don’t use them to “boost my bust” as advertised, there is an element of that! Lol! I’m linking here to a set of three bra strap clips each in white, black and beige.
Since a fitted stretch dress like this tends to show those pesky lumps and bumps we all hate, you might also try one of the shapewear items out there. My shapewear of choice is this high-waist mid-thigh shorts shapewear from Spanx. As I don’t like the feel of anything too constraining, I prefer this lighter weight version but there are also pieces with firmer hold like this higher power shapewear that even lifts the booty! Gotta like that, right?
