Let’s face it. When we are in the midst of the summer heat we all reach for our favorite version of shorts and tees, right? And we’ve all decided to forgo worrying about the state of our over 50 legs, right? After all, these are the only legs we’ve got and we are wearing–and flaunting–them! Right, ladies??!!
Passing 50, and beyond, I figure we’ve earned the right to appreciate and enjoy what we’ve got. Sure, it doesn’t look the same, but we’ve all earned those changes. My legs no longer tan evenly and they have sun damage and mottled spots and they just aren’t as taut and smooth as they used to be. Can you relate? When I was younger, I don’t think I had the confidence to feel good about the shape they were in, so I’m doing it now! I truly believe we can wear anything as long as we have confidence in ourselves and feel like we’re showing our best selves.
So, sun damage and all, here are some ideas for styling the summer basics for casual days: shorts and tees.
Summer Basics: Shorts and Tees
V-neck Tee and Denim Shorts
The first outfit I’m sharing is super casual. It’s the kind of shorts outfit I put together for a walk, running errands, or kicking around at home. Is there anything better than denim shorts and a tee?
The shorts have a high waist (love that!) in a medium wash which is perfect for summer. The sleeveless tee is super simple with a V-neck and chest pocket. This one is by Madewell who makes great tees at reasonable prices.
Nautical Shorts and Shell Outfit
Navy and white give this look a nautical theme and it’s a safe color combination that always works. The striped tunic shell is cool cotton knit with a back button keyhole. While I’ve stuck to the two-color theme, the top would look great with red or any other brightly colored shorts or jeans. You could even wear it with slacks and a blazer for a professional look, so it’s clearly very versatile.
While I styled the top with my white denim Bermuda shorts, it would look great with denim rolled-cuff shorts, too.
In a previous post, I mentioned this double-knit hooded jacket that I picked up at J.Jill for our upcoming cruise. It’s a perfect weight layer and the drawstring hood will come in handy. There are twill-tape side ties at the hemline so you can control the fit. And it has pockets!! Woohoo! I bought it in both the blue and the moss. I also bought the matching sleeveless knit tops with a cute back pleat. These pieces will give me lots of options for warm or cooler weather. They come in several colors and are on sale. (It’s that time of year, my friends! So many sales, too little time–or money! Lol!)
These blue beaded hoop earrings will make a great addition to your casual summer wardrobe.
Paperbag Shorts and Tees
Paperbag waist shorts are trending big this season. That’s a good thing as the looser fit is super comfortable and looks good on almost anyone. These cute polka-dots shorts came in a Trunk Club selection and I knew I would like them. Styled with a classic white tee–another one from Madewell–they take a plain shorts outfit up a notch or two. Of course, you could dress them up even more with wedges and a dressier blouse like the one I styled in the post Chambray Shorts and Lace Shell Outfit.
I styled the look here with some older red mules for a little more red, white and blue in honor of July 4th!
Enjoy the long, lazy days of summer with laid back style. Shorts and tees are the basic pieces for summer so wear them and flaunt those legs!
