How was your Memorial Day weekend? Well, here we all are on hump day so things are back to normal! For me, that means heading back home to the “May gray, June gloom” that is present along the coast. The sun normally does break through but with mostly sunny days year-round, the gloom gets old pretty fast. I know, how about a little cheese with that whine, right? Lol! While in the desert, however, the temperatures were just perfect: high 80’s with a 103 thrown in on Memorial Day. In that kind of heat, less is best, in terms of clothing at least. So shorts, skirts, and sundresses are the order of the day. My choice was a pair of great white shorts and a halter top.
The white shorts
White shorts are classic. They are an absolute must for every woman. And I do mean every. woman. I know some ladies think that white makes them look big, but it really depends how you style them. Just find a fit that looks decent, feels comfortable and is a length you can live with. Honestly, that’s it. They go with absolutely everything and are the perfect look for summer. And for your vacation to any warm locale.
White scallop shorts (currently on sale!)
You can see that my legs are NOT perfect. A little sun damage (actually, a LOT!) and some wrinkles are very easy to see. But they are MY legs and I’m wearing them! I walk quite a bit and that at least helps them keep some shape. The white shorts are from Talbots from last year and are just great in terms of style and shape. They are still available this year.
The halter top
I love the look of a bright orange against the white of the shorts. I have also worn this top with white jeans and a blazer and it looks great. The top is a laser cut style that is exclusive to Stitch Fix, so if you want this exact top you do have to sign up. I still enjoy one or two of the selections in my monthly Stitch Fix. An orange top also looks amazing with jeans or a skirt.
If you are worried about too much white in your shorts making your backside look too big, wear a longer length top in a bright color like this orange. If you don’t have one in your wardrobe, I have selected a few at various price points and hues for you to take a look at
The accessories
A good pair of leather sandals is also essential for summer. A tan color in the sandal will go with everything. Mine is from last year. They are from Franco Sarto and here is a nice pair that is similar.
Once again, this woven circle bag is a great accessory for this outfit. I tied a cheetah print skinny scarf around the strap to tie things together. Orange looks so great with animal print!
Another summer must-have is a great hat with SPF protection. This one was a major purchase I made last year and it is worth every penny. I use it constantly–and especially on vacation–to protect my hair and my face from getting burned. This Fedora style is by Eric Javits who makes high-quality hats that last. This style is even more versatile as you can tie any color skinny scarf around the top to match your outfits.
The property we stayed at for this little trip was the Renaissance in Indian Wells. It’s a lovely place with an extended pool and three restaurants. As you can see from the photos, the grounds are really pretty.
I hope you enjoyed our little trip to the desert and got some inspiration for your next trip–either in wardrobe or location!
Check-in Friday for one more post with hot weather ideas.
Love the orange top! Just got a pair of shoes with some orange stripes in them and it would make a great tie-in! You look great!
Thanks, Elizabeth! So nice of you! You will have to style those shoes in a blog post so I can check them out. Love orange in the summer, don’t you? Have a great weekend–coming soon!
xx Darlene
The scenery is awesome – is that where you live?! Love your outfit, especially that pretty top – gorgeous xx
Hi Maria,
The photos are from our trip to Palm Springs. It’s about 2 hours from our house in Orange County. It’s really pretty in the desert! Thanks for the top comment–Target does it again! Lol! Have a great weekend.
