Now that it’s officially winter, it’s time to talk winter fashion! As fashion is based on a few essentials, I’m sharing a camel coat that is one of my winter staples.
With all the hubbub of the Christmas and New Year’s holidays, the official start of winter was a bit overshadowed. However, December 21st was the official first day of winter marked by the Winter Solstice.
As a reminder, here’s exactly what the Winter Solstice is:
The winter solstice is the day with the shortest period of daylight and longest night of the year, when the Sun is at its lowest daily maximum elevation in the sky. At the pole, there is continuous darkness or twilight around the winter solstice. Its opposite is the summer solstice.
So, there you have it. Bottom line: the days will get a tiny bit longer every day now as winter works its way through, and to me, that is a good thing! It’s interesting that we call summer the long dog days of summer, when in actuality the days begin to get shorter following the Summer Solstice which took place on June 20th. Because we are all focused on the changes that 2021 will bring about, here’s something we can look forward to: the Summer Solstice on June 21st! Lol!
Now, on to that winter wardrobe essential: the camel coat.
The Essential Camel Coat
The double-breasted coat I’m styling here is 42% wool so it is fairly warm. This weight will work well for our climate here in Southern California. In colder weather, layers would make it work as it is a medium weight coat. It has a single button closure and a loose shape so if you are looking for something more tailored, take a look at some of these:
In terms of sizing, I purchased a Medium Petite, thinking I wanted enough room to wear a heavier sweater or even a fitted blazer underneath. A small would work, but they are sold out and I am fine with the looser fit and shape. (Petite sizes sold out but there are still lots of Regular and some Plus sizes left. I think a plus-sized gal could get away with a regular due to the oversized fit.)
The official name for the color of this coat is “Cabana Brown.” (What?!! Are cabanas brown?) While it is a bit darker shade than a true camel, the hues are similar.
This camel coat was originally $200 and I picked it up for less than $70 so I couldn’t pass it up! But honestly, a wool coat like this is a classic piece that you will wear for many years so it makes sense to pay a bit more and invest in this wardrobe staple.
Oops, I left the stitch on the back vent! I hate it when that happens! Lol!
Styling a Classic Coat
The styling possibilities, of course, are unlimited. A coat like this looks great over a dress or skirt outfit and with trousers, too. I elected to style it casually for this post, reflecting the laid-back vibe I’m striving for in this new year!! But you will see this coat styled lots of ways in the coming months.
Ankle Jeans | Ribbed Turtleneck Top (snug-fitting) | Vionic Slouch Booties (fit orthotics) | Leopard Wrap Bracelet | Leopard Calf Hair Belt (another essential at a great price!)
Do you have a camel coat in your closet? If not, consider picking one up. It will serve you well and provide you with a classic look for years to come.
Your coat is stunning and I love how you styled it!
Thanks so much, Amy! These camel coats are just so classic you can’t go wrong! Have a great week!

Life is a Shoe
Thanks so much, Celine. We don’t have a very cold winter but when it gets into the 50s at night, it’s definitely time for a coat for this wimpy cold girl! Lol!

It is a gorgeous coat, Darlene! I love the darker shade of camel as lighter shades do not work with my complexion! Beautiful styling, too, my friend! I am definitely looking forward to longer hours of sunlight!

Adorable Darlene, I got a fabulous camel coat last year, having put on Covid weight I fear it won’t fit me know! Diet for me I think. Jacqui x
Same here, Jacqui. My issue often isn’t just weight but where it’s redistributed. Ugh. Back to work on the health and the bod!

I always look forward to the winter solstice and seeing on my weather app how the days slowly start to get longer. It’s a real morale booster. A camel coat is an essential – I have one in a more beige shade which I bought in NY many years ago, and it was a great investment.
I feel the same, Gail. We are moving back toward longer days and more sunlight!! Woohoo! Love all these shades of camel in coats. So versatile! Happy new year!

That’s a beautiful coat and I like how you style them. You always have best ideas for combining clothes.

I LOVE your camel coat on you! Such a classic! I love the jeans too, they look great. I am trying a high rise jean soon too.
I just posted the Mango camel coat you shared, and am glad I bought it when I did. I had been looking for a camel coat for awhile! Love the tan accessories!

Oh, I love that Mango coat! It looks great on you! I styled it with jeans cause that’s mostly what we’re wearing, well besides sweats and joggers!! Lol! But these coats look great over anything, don’t they? Wishing you a healthy and happy new year, Jess!
