A knit jumpsuit is an essential piece to have in your closet. In black, it’s a versatile piece that can be styled in so many ways. Today I’m showing it two ways. One, a “dressed down” version that fits our 2020 lifestyle: casual, comfy, and super soft for curling up on the couch. The second version shows how easy it is to “style it up” with a few accessories. This will be a great evening look for 2021–maybe by New Year’s Eve 2021, that is!
Yes, with Christmas upon us and New Year’s Eve coming right up, it’s time to turn our heads toward the end of this unbelievable year. While our NYE celebrations will definitely be simpler this year (now, how many times have I said THAT?!), they can still be stylish. A black knit jumpsuit is just the thing to style now, with an eye to bigger, better styling options in the coming year.
Styling Options for The Knit Jumpsuit
Circa 2020
If you’re like me, you can certainly recall a few New Year Eve’s spent at home, watching a good movie and ringing in the New Year by watching the giant ball fall in Times Square. (Even that will be different this year with little or no crowds!!) The difference this year is that none of our stay-at-home plans are optional, and of course, we all like to make conscious choices as to how to celebrate our holidays. Nonetheless, a quieter evening spent playing cards and toasting the new year with our small inner circle is in order.
So, what to wear? A simple knit jumpsuit in classic black will fit the bill perfectly. There are lots of this style out there; I chose this one from Express for the features I like:
- Bateau neck
- Long sleeves
- Sash tie belt
- Ankle cuffs
- In Regular and Petite Sizes
- Polyester/Rayon/Spandex
The bateau neckline and the ankle cuffs give is a current, edgy look.
It also comes in charcoal, light plum, and beige, just in case you don’t like or need a black one. In any color, this jumpsuit is a keeper!
For a stylish yet casual celebration, I style it with my older leopard mules. It has a self-belt, but I added a calf-hair leopard one in its place for a few matchy-matchy accessories. Voila! The look is complete! And perfect for the year 2020. (Reno is our new photo-bomber!)
Circa 2021
OK, there is no question that we are ALL looking forward to a NEW year!! Whew, what a year this has been. The change certainly won’t be immediate with the vaccine rolling out over time, but at least we can look forward to our new normal.
There is a great video by Simon Sinek (the British-born American author and motivational speaker famous for his “Start with Why” video) named, “There Is No Going Back to Normal.” While his outlook comes from a business perspective, I believe he is right. Things will definitely be different in business, in education, even in the way we live our lives. But that’s OK. Change is inevitable. And ultimately, that’s a good thing, right?
In any case, it will be wonderful to be able to do things, go places, see friends and family, TRAVEL!!, and actually find good reasons to dress up!!
So, in anticipation of dressing up in 2021, I’ve taken the same basic knit jumpsuit and added some bling!! Just the addition of this adorable rhinestone belt, silver sandals (with a lower block heel–my preference!), and some statement earrings gives the look a whole new feel. And won’t that feel good?
In both versions, I’m styling my newest cuff bracelets from Victoria Emerson. They give any outfit an update! Check out my collection on the front page of my blog: My Favorite Bracelets!
After seeing the photos, I’ve decided I can wear it with the rhinestone belt anytime! Even this NYE!
Enjoy the holidays, my friends, and here’s to a brighter 2021!
I am loving this piece! You look so elegant 🙂

Nothing like a knit jumpsuit for comfort and they are so fun and easy to style, right? Thank you very much.

I have to make a point to wear my jumpsuit this coming year. Love the addition of the rhinestone belt. I can see that belt dressing up a jeans look too. Looking lovely!

Thanks so much, sweet Mireille! Yes, I think this belt–inexpensive from Amazon!–would look great with jeans, too. Do wear your jumpsuit! There are so many cool ways to style them! Happy new year!

Darlene, this jumpsuit is brilliant on you! I love your leopard mules. And the second option with the silver belt and shoes is just gorgeous and perfect for the holidays spent at home. I think many of us have been resisting all these new changes for many months and we are just now realizing that things will never be the same again and our only choice is to adapt! May we all fare better in 2021! Thanks for linking with me. I hope you have a blessed Christmas!

Yes, may we all fare better in 2021, indeed. Next year has GOT to be a better year regardless, right? Nope, things will never be the same, but let’s hope we’ve learned some lessons that will make it better!! Thanks for the lovely comment, Shelbee. New Year is on the horizon!!

Hi Darlene!
This jumpsuit looks wonderful on you! I love the look and it looks quite comfy, a win-win! My mom is stuggling with the idea that we are cooped up and beleive me, I am feeling Covid fatigue! I was just talking about how NYE will look like as far as the ball dropping on tv. I am usually a sad sack who cant make it up until midnight! anyhow! 🙂
Love both ways youve styled with leopard shoes and then, of course the bling for the Holidays with your sparkly silver belt and pretty earrings. Looking forward to being able to do things when we al have been vaccinated!
Merry Christmas to you and your family! kisses to the fur babies!

Aw, the fur babies love that!! Same to yours, Jess! I think we are all chomping at the bit to get out and get back to some semblance of normal! That is probably how we’ll be celebrating NYE, too! Lol! But just the thought that we CAN’T go out even if we wanted is what makes this harder, I think. Anyway, looking forward to the new year, too. Wishing you, your mom, husband, and pups a wonderful Christmas!

I love how you switched it up with a belt! And pairing it with leopard shoes is a great touch! This jumpsuit is so cute on you!
Thanks, Laura. I’m loving the rhinestone belt right now. Any bling you can add brightens things up–something we all need right now! Enjoy your holidays!
