We’ve all worn an all-denim outfit at one time or another, right? Sometimes on purpose and sometimes by just throwing a denim jacket over our jeans outfit. The look is considered de rigueur at times while at other times totally scorned. Where do you stand on the all-denim or the often-called Canadian Tuxedo look?
The term for this look, the “Canadian Tuxedo” is fairly common. But honestly, do we even know where the expression came from? Sure, we all thought it was a colloquial term that Canadians (a fun-loving group! I can say that because my mom was Canadian) coined, right? But there is an actual context for the name, and here it is, according to Wikipedia:
The term reportedly originated in 1951 after Bing Crosby was refused entry to a hotel in Vancouver, British Columbia because he was wearing a denim top and denim bottoms. After learning of the incident, Levi Strauss & Co. designed a tuxedo made entirely of denim for Crosby as a publicity stunt.
A fun story, right? I love to research the back story on fashion names and history. I hope you do, too! So much for the fun-loving Canadian theory! Lol!
In any case, we’ve had a cloudy cool week–totally unusual for us this time of year–and an all-denim outfit just felt right. Read on for the details…
The All-Denim Outfit
These jeans by Wit & Wisdom are the same pair that I showed in the post, Fall Trends From the #NSale. (I did end up sizing down one size, however, as these run just a tad larger.) I love the fit of these straight-leg jeans that are slim, but not tight, fitting. The price even after the sale is moderate.
The fit molds to your tummy and waist, due to the Ab-Solution stretch technique they use. It ensures they fit just right and holds you in without feeling tight. Love that!
There are LOTS of denim jackets out there and I’m sure you have a least one. Or more? This one is my current favorite. It’s from Chico’s and has enough stretch to make it comfortable to wear over shirts and sweaters. I did buy it in a size 1 rather than my usual size 0 because I like a looser fit in jackets.
The Bag and Belt
I am totally in love with this bag! During our trips this summer, I rediscovered the convenience of using a shoulder bag. It’s just so much easier to get around with your hands free, know what I mean? I’ve been looking at this bag for some time and finally took the plunge! To be honest, I find it a bit overpriced but it has turned out to be totally worth it!
I get so many compliments on this bag. Best of all, it holds just enough of my VIP (very important possessions to carry around all the time.) and still lies flat against my body. The strap is interchangeable so it can be customized to wear with lots of outfits.
These vegan messenger bags come in lots of colors and you can order the strap (or straps) that work best with your wardrobe. Choose from black, navy, cognac, and gray (Fall and Winter colors), or in stone (like mine), blush, and chocolate. They are all super cute!
Afar less-expensive version of the vegan bag is on Amazon. Check out their crossbody bag/strap shown here in cognac for a similar, less pricey option.
This calf-hair leopard print belt gets lots of wear–and the price is right. I would pay a lot more for a belt of this quality.
So, what do YOU think? Would you wear an all-denim outfit? Have I changed your mind? There are lots of times when the “Canadian Tuxedo” is just the right look.
