Velvet never goes out of style, but it becomes even more popular during the holiday season. To show you just how versatile velvet can be, here are three ways to style a pre-loved velvet shirt.
There is something about this rich, sumptuous fabric that everyone loves.
So, let’s talk a bit about the pre-loved term…
The Pre-Loved Velvet Shirt
Being a fashion blogger, and knowing that the fashion industry is responsible for causing for a large share of impact on our environment can be concerning. I’ve been happy to see that the industry is paying attention. You may have noticed all the sustainable efforts made by brands as well as lots of recycled garments. These are all good signs and help a bit with the guilt.
Knowing that I decided to follow the efforts my blogging peers, Shelbee and Nancy, who are the queens of “pre-loved” clothing. There aren’t really any good venues around me for pre-used clothing, so I visited Poshmark.
What is Poshmark? Here’s their branding motto:
Poshmark is a leading social marketplace for new and secondhand style for women, men, kids, pets, home, and more.
Shop from millions of people — and start selling too!
Over the past few years, I’ve bought a few things and been pretty happy with them. As the motto goes, you can also list and sell items from your closet. It’s a good way to recycle your clothing and limit our contribution to our environmental woes.
The velvet shirt I’m showing today is from Free People so is a higher price point piece. It still had the tags on it, showing it originally at $148. I paid $48, so a good buy for a quality velvet piece.
It’s clearly an oversized fit, with a button front and a gathered back. I would call it a poet shirt style.
Wouldn’t you know it, you can find a few of these tops on Amazon, albeit in limited quantities? Here are the links:
Free People has lots of choices in velvet tops, and you can find them all in one place–on Amazon.
Another favorite is Soft Surroundings velvet boyfriend shirt that comes in rich jewel tones.
Three Ways to Style a Pre-Loved Velvet Shirt
Truly, there are so many ways to style this shirt, but here I’m showing the following ways to demonstrate the possibilities.
- Wear it over a mock neck sweater and skinny jeans as a shirt jacket with booties.
- Tuck and blouse it over a pair of trousers.
- Style it with your favorite leggings for a long and lean look.
- Style it with a belt.
First, I’ve styled the shirt with jeans, because, well, we can all do that without thinking! With the oversized fit of the top, I went with an old pair of Universal Threads skinny jeans.
The options for styling a poet-style top like this with leggings are also endless. For a sophisticated all-black look, add Ponte knit or those popular Spanx faux leather leggings (which I think look best with a longer top), and add a sparkly belt as I have here. Available in Petite and Regular sizes.
Of course, anything in leopard or animal print looks amazing with a black top! I purchased these SUPER inexpensive leopard leggings two years ago and love them still!
For a fun casual look, I’ve styled the pre-loved velvet shirt here with a pair of plaid trousers that have been in my closet for years. As my husband said, I look a bit hippy due to the pleated pants with so much fabric tucked in. So you have to be ok with that for this look!
For you ladies that are loving those popular black military boots, this top over a denim skirt and those chunky boots would look cool and edgy.
Any of these three ways to wear a velvet shirt would be amazing for the holidays! And do consider shopping pre-loved pieces this season! You can see that, regardless of what you style it with, a velvet shirt creates a chic and elegant look.
