I love color. I tend to choose clothes with color and I have consciously avoided wearing black when I know everyone else will be! Having said that, there are those times when you want to wear the right thing and you don’t want to have to think too hard about it. So–a rule of thumb for those unknown times is: wear black and white.
To illustrate, I worked with a gal who got a new job where the dress code was more formal and conservative than she had worn before. She was really worried about what to wear. A friend of hers told her, “When in doubt, wear black and white.” She was totally correct! You can never go wrong with this color combination.
The black and white outfit
For this look, I am wearing black jeans with a frayed uneven hem. So this version is clearly a casual outfit. But you could just as easily swap these pieces for more traditional pieces. In this instance, a pair of black slacks would be perfect.
Under this adorable black and white moto-style jacket, I am wearing a basic tee. This one is from Lands End. They make lovely basics like tees and sweaters out of high-quality cotton which I love. Again, swap out the tee for a lovely blouse and you are ready for a dressier occasion.
While this jacket is a cotton fabric, it could easily be worn to dress up an outfit. If you have a moto jacket in your closet, consider the possibilities. This style works for almost all occasions including a traditional work environment.
And my white mules–yes, I do love them!! They give this casual outfit a trendier look and give me a little height, which helps when you are on the shorter side. Of course, you could swap them out for heels for work, or sneakers for an even more laid-back look.
Ah, yes, the dreaded “rear” shot! Ugh. But you can see another view of the jacket and the uneven spread of the hem on these jeans. My favorite pair!
A basic black purse always works, too, but a colorful red or pink would be smashing, don’t you think?

I so agree! Thanks, Jodie. I really enjoy your blog. You ladies look like you are having a ball!
That is such a good statement! One I use myself. Loving your frayed jeans, I’ve got a couple of pairs and love them. I will be increasing this quota to include a lighter pair for Spring. Jacqui

Thanks, Jacqui! They are a great look. Loving your blog as well! Take care, Darlene
I actually never liked black and white. Had to do with my years working in a restaurant I think. But I ordered a black and white dress now and seeing those colours on you, I think I made a good choice! Beautiful look!
That’s so great, Nancy! I think you’ll like it. Go ahead and add a pop of red or pink or yellow in your shoes or bag, or even in your jewelry. That should get rid of that “uniform” look! Haha! Let me know how it turns out!
Hi Darlene! Whenever I wore black or white, my mom always said that I either looked like a waitress, an umpire, or prison escapee. LOL! Miss you!
Haha! You and Nancy were both reminded of waitressing!! I love it! Like I told Nancy, it actually works better with a pop of color. Love you, too! Let’s get together soon.
