What goes around, comes around. That old saying is certainly true in fashion. Take tie-dye fashion for instance. I have seen this trend come and go most of my life. The playfulness and freshness just appeal to all of us, right?
Thinking back, I had several tee shirts in tie-dye as a kid. I specifically remember a shirt and pants in pastel shades that I wore the day after the prom. So, yeah, a LONG time ago!! LOL!
Such a great memory. The boy that took me to the prom was a guy I’d had a crush on since ninth grade! So, it was a sweet memory that he and I went to the prom together. We both moved on from there, as so often happens. He still lives in the little town in Michigan where I spent my teen years and I know he’s made someone a great husband and father.
Isn’t it funny how certain styles or songs or even scents bring back memories? Well, tie-dye fashion sure does that for me.
Here are just a few pieces that I am enjoying currently as well as some other cute options…
Tie-Dye Fashion
The Sweatshirt and Shorts
There are so many cute tie-dye pieces to choose from and the sweatshirts are gorgeous! Here I’m styling an inexpensive tie-dye sweatshirt from Target. The colors are subtle, and unfortunately, don’t show up very well in the photos! But the peach at the top bleeds ombre-style into a yellow shade and then into white and it’s really pretty! (I’ve included a picture in the widget below!)
I love the shorter length of this sweatshirt!
Here are some other cute tie-dye options:
Here I have to stop and tell you about these denim shorts. I think most of us wear some form of cut-offs in the summer, am I right? I generally have great luck with denim shorts from Target’s Universal Threads. However, when I saw these, I was interested as they are just a bit longer and I like the medium-blue color.
You know how your favorite pair of jeans fit? Like they belong on you and conform to the contours of your body. With a touch of Tencel, these immediately felt like that. They have a higher waist and are not super tight, kind of like a “mom” jean. Additionally, they are quite a bit pricier, but worth it in my opinion.
Tie Dye Tops
There are obviously LOTS of tie-dye tops to choose from, so here I went with an athleisure tie-dye top. This top is super easy to style as I have here with shorts, but what most attracted me is that this top will be perfect for yoga and exercise classes. (While those are currently just streamed at home, I so look forward to actually attending a class in person!) It’s loose and comfy and will fit right over a sports bra and provide cover for your hips and behind in leggings.
I have a pair of blue leggings from Zella that look perfect with this top. Target also has cute leggings in heathered blue, with a matching sports bra. This is one of those long-line bras that fit comfortably and don’t ride up!
Here are a few options:
Tie-Dye Fashion Maxi Dresses
In a maxi dress, the tie-dye look really adds some fun. This older “mixed media” dress (read about that designation in the post Two Ways to Style A Mixed Media Dress. Many of commented on not really knowing what that meant. Neither did I until I looked it up! Lol!) is from Chico’s and an old favorite. I take this dress on vacation and it always looks new and fresh, despite its age!
Adding a mixed pearl necklace and bracelet keeps the casual vibe.
Here are some more tie-dye dresses:
If you haven’t refreshed your wardrobe with a little tie-dye fashion, consider adding some. Or pull out your older tie-dye pieces and jazz them up with accessories and style them with your favorite denim. Nobody will guess they are flashes from the past!
I am absolutely in love with tie dye and I am so happy they are back. It’s such a unique piece and the colors are stunning. I love your maxi dress – it’s a stunner.

Thank you, Maureen! There’s reason tie-dye keeps coming around in fashion, isn’t there? There are so many cute things to choose from, it’s hard to decide!

I just found a dress I bought in Majorca last year – will share on the blog soon. Love yours Darlene – great dress. Jacqui x
Ooh, that should be very authentic tie-dye! Can’t wait to see it!

I love the refrained color palette of the current tie dye trend! It’s just 2-3 colors instead of the entire rainbow. It makes it feel so much more elevated and chic! The pieces you have are darling! I just love that dress!
You are right about the more subtle palettes in tie-dye. There are still some bright and crazy versions, but the newer ones are more subdued. Thanks for the sweet comment, Laura!

It’s about tie dye, but how good do shorts look on you! Fabulous!
Aw, thanks my sweet friend! My legs have lots of flaws, but I don’t care–I’m wearing shorts in the summer! Lol!
